I threw away a 17 year old t-shirt yesterday, how does that happen?

About a year or so ago, I did what I am calling the top layer of decluttering. No big deal, I told myself, this is easy and then I got stuck.

Recently, I started up again. I finally read Its All Too Much and it was just the nudge I needed.

So the other day, I was attacking the closet again (white T shirts breed, don't they?) and came across a favorite t-shirt.

I will wear this to bed, I think to myself, its too good to give up.

That night, I wear it to bed.

After a few minutes, I feel this little touch on my back and a tiny little finger working at something.

Mommy, there is a hole in your shirt, DS says. And another, and another as he worries all the tiny holes in my shirt with his little fingers.

Mommy, I will ask Daddy to take me to The T-Shirt Store and get you a new one that doesn't have holes.

My 4 year old is smarter than me, he knows it is time for the shirt to go.

As I threw it in the trash the next morning, I realized it was over 17 years old! When did I get old enough to have 17 year old shirts?

I've had similar thoughts... But hey, you still fit the same t-shirt as you did 17 years ago!

I have a shirt from elementary school I like to wear because it's fun...

LOL

If it makes you feel better I realized the other day that I have a pair of shoes still in my closet that I know came with me on a high school trip to Russia in the summer of 1990. OMG I have 20+ year old shoes...

At least I am still using them and getting my full dollars worth out of them and they still look pretty good all in all.

At least you got full value out of that shirt, congrats on letting it go.

LOL! I have a Go-Go's tshirt from 1984. I just can't give it up. Oh, and I also have a JFA (Jodie Foster's Army) shirt which may predate that one!!

LOL....love your post, especially the "when did I get old enough..."
If it makes you feel any better I still have a few tops that are over 20 years old.... just can't bring myself to throw them away...

My DH loves to hold onto t shirts till they are like swiss cheese and the stitching at the neck is falling apart..he says they are more comfy like that for sleeping in.

Congrats on letting the shirt go, but I have to say your DS sounds ADORABLE! Where can I get one like that?

Ok, I feel better to know I am not alone.

And for what it is worth, it would be a crying shame to throw out a Go-Gos shirt. If it still fits, I would TOTALLY be wearing it BCFD.

He had to run his little fingers over and around all the little holes, which tickled and felt good at the same time, causing me to giggle, which made him giggle, which was delightful.

You're trying to kill me with the cuteness here, aren't you? That's beyond sweet. I can't wait for mine to get here!

Just you wait, you will be cluttered with crushing cuteness before you know it!

17 year old t-shirts are a piece of cake compared to letting go of little pjs...

Oh, God. I have to throw those away? I can keep the socks, though, right? Right?!?

Oh sure. In fact, I have socks in a shadow box frame on the wall!

I just threw away a pair of boots from 1997 after finding a dead palmetto bug in the toe!

And I still have my spring break t-shirt from 1990, in all it's airbrushed glory!

I had a couple shirts with writing all over them - from high school speech two years, a trip to Disneyland in middle school, etc. I'm not quite as old as some of you, apparently so it's not 17 years but it's a good 10+. My big plan was to cut out each quote signature and use them as rags until they fell apart. But I don't think that's going to happen before we move so they may just be photographed and tossed. I did write down as much as I could read of the quotes and funny sayings on them for posterity.

Other than that I don't think I have any super-old clothes.

Heh. When I first read this post, I didn't even make the connection, but in fact I am, at this moment, wearing a 17-year-old t-shirt. It is one of my favorites. And it's not yet raggy enough to turn into handkerchiefs. But when it is...those will be some fine handkerchiefs.

Confession: there's a blouse in my closet that I bought in 1987 - from my first "tutoring earnings". I even wore it a couple of times this past fall.

I have clothes from 1986 and beyond. I have repurposed, given away, and thrown out some clothing, but I just can't see getting rid of clothes that still have a use (I even wear my stained stuff I wouldn't wear out of house in the home). Must be why I have boxes stored at the temporary place I am in now.... I long for a huge metal building to live in so I can get all my stuff out of storage and see what I have again. Being able to get rid of old tshirts is cool, but I am not there yet, I keep reading the posts in this forum though.
