We have a 5 month old pit/bulldog mix. He is coming along pretty well in his training, but I cannot keep him from running out the front door. Besides the obvious safety concerns, we live i an apartment complex with a lot of kids that he likes to run and jump all over so this is something that has to be stopped. I have tried to do the "going to the dentist" move at the door, but he just thinks I am playing with him (I am not scary, I guess) I have tried giving him lots of extra walks and tiring him out, but as soon as I open the door, he is out. He will literally be laying on the floor panting like crazy and as soon as the door opens, he runs to it. Any good advice on how to make him quit running outside would be great.

Does he know sit and stay? I'd put him in a sit stay some ways back from the door before it gets opened. If he moves, the door gets closed and you start over. Initially it takes a lot of walking to the door and closing it immediately and retrying. But after awhile he'll catch. At first open it only a little, then shut it right away and praise him. Work up to opening it wider and his staying longer. Until then, if you need to go out I would confine him someplace before going to the door. Its important that he not be able to continue his current behavior, so he needs to be physically kept away from the door except during training until he is fairly reliable.
