Back 2 Sleep/Rolling Over

My DS is 4.5 months old. He can roll from his back to his tummy, but not the other way around. He is rolling onto his tummy to sleep. So what do I do when my doc keeps asking if I am putting him on his back to sleep? I am using a positioner and putting him on his side, which is his preferred way to sleep. But he rolls onto his tummy and gets himself comfy. Do I move him back? Do I leave him?

All 3 of mine were tummy sleepers. After the first baby proved how much better she slept that way, I never even tried putting them on their backs. I did not worry about it at all, as long as they could lift their heads- but we cosleep, so I was right there anyway. So obviously I'd leave him, but it depends on your comfort level.

I would not put my baby on her tummy to sleep, but at the point that she's doing it on her own, I feel ok with it. So, I would just leave him.

as far as the ped goes, you can answer "yes" you may put him on his back, he just doesn't stay there! but I figure if they can roll to their tummies and prefer this; then it is not worth fighting a losing battle; like trying to make a left-handed person write with the opposite hand.

My son has loved to sleep on his tummy from the moment he learned to roll. I asked my ped about it and he said to put him down on his back but what a baby does during the night is his business and not to worry about it.
