a name

Ailish Roan

(or Ailish Wren)

i'm strong irish and love gaelic names and celtic culture. and there's a strong chance babe will have my strawberry blonde hair and the freckles i had as a kid. <3

what d'ya think? other than it sounds like eye-lash. i know this, found a fb group for people w/ the name (never know what you'll find w/ google) and even tho many mention the eye-lash thing, there's an overwhelming majority who express pride in having it.

you have to say it just right (isle-ish) to maximize it's sound. i particularly love the unique 'ish' ending, as opposed to the typical 'y' or 'a' girls always have. and i like the strong sound of Roan to balance out the softness of Ailish.

however. i'm open to other mn suggestions.

naming this girl is so much harder than naming my boys. have no idea why. one of the things i find myself doing is pretending a cute little girl in the grocery store has the name, and evaluating it from that angle. so far so good.

I personally love it! I adore gaelic names. Saoirse is my personal favorite but my husband nixed ALL of the good gaelic names. sigh.

does it sound obvious gaelic or just like an irish-trendy name? i'm going for obvious gaelic....

I love it, but i think roan would sound better pronounced roan, as it looks, long o almost short a but not quite

kinda like rowin? funny, because i saw Rowena recently and read it as ro-WEN-a and loved it and considered it. that is, until i realized it's pronounced ro-WEE-na.

I love it! Like Roan more than Wren as middle name

Love it! Partial to Roan for the middle name, as Rowan is on our short list of first names.

hawthorn--didn't we talk on a previous thread about gaelic names? (sorry, mdc is so big i have trouble keeping people straight) if so, you *must* tell me what name you ultimately choose to go w/.

I think it is obvious gaelic, not trendy Irish.

I like it, but I think you will have to correct people's pronounciation of the name. When I first read it I thought "ale-ish" or "ally-sh" or maybe even "ally-sha". The way you want it said (which is the correct way!) "isle-ish" is much more lovely. Not really a big issue, but just something to consider.

I do not think it is trendy at all, and when said correctly a lovely name. It matches very well with Roan.

I know one Ailish whose family is actually Irish, and she pronounces it A-lish, not I-lish. This is just a thought, if you don't want the eye-lash stigma.
