Anyone else with a VERY difficult teether???

DD has been crying, whining, fussing, and throwing tantrums non-stop for 4 days. Her top two teeth are coming in. Or at least, they seem to be. They're swollen, one is white and you can see the tooth about to push through. But they've been that way for about 2 weeks now. Despite 4 days of great pain, they still haven't moved. The Tylenol, Mortin, and Hylands seem to be losing their effect, so she's nursing every half hour or so while awake.

Any tips for dealing with this? I've tried cold wash cloths, frozen pacifiers and other teethers, she has a Sophie giraffe, vibrating teethers, and a teething necklace she's been wearing since 3 months. Nothing's helping.

Is it normal for teeth to take this long to break through?

I think babies fuss the most for the first few teeth, and then again fuss alot for the first few molars.
Our ped. recommended rubbing a drop or two of benadryl on the swollen gums, that the irritation comes from the swelling of the gums, and then it doesn't feel weird like with the novacain-y ones. We've done this with both DDs and it works wonders. And it's only a drop or two, so it doesn't get into their system like motrin or Tylenol.

My DD was what we called a perpetual teether, she seriously teethed for close to 2 years. She had pushy teeth, that would push and recede, no doubt about it, it sucked. I remember her eye teeth were the worst of the worst, I literally wore her all day, everyday for at least a month when she was 14 months. She slept in the Ergo for every nap, if I put her down she cried.

She started teething and getting teeth at 3.5 months, teething for her was a pain(literally). Ibuprofen, teething tablets and orajel got us through, but barely.

maddymama - What kind of Benadryl do you rub on their gums? Is there a liquid children's Benadryl? I would love to try something that didn't get in her system much, like the Tylenol and Motrin. I hate giving meds, but I can't stand to see her in so much pain either.

Norasmomma - DD's teeth do the back and forth thing too, it drives me crazy.

Dd is 15 months old and only has 5 teeth and no more in sight. BUT, she's had episodes of teething since she was a few months old. I like the Benadryl idea. I'll try that next time before Tylenol. I don't like doing anything, but she was miserable. (And no one was sleeping...)

Definitely here too. My guy has been teething for maybe 2 months now. But his top two just cut maybe 2 weeks ago, one bottom one cut last week, and the other bottom one is cutting right now. He won't sleep when the pain is really bad, and I've had some days where I'm literally ready to rip my hair out by the end of the day - DH gets home, I pass him off and I'm done until bedtime. The only thing that works is Ibuprofen. For a while we were alternating Motrin & Tylenol, but the Tylenol is just not as effective. So when it's really bad I dose him right before bed and again in the morning, and then at least I get 1 nap a day out of him.

Just the liquid children's benadryl, like you would give for an allergic reaction or allergies....
Wash your hands, pour a small amount into a dish or a cup, sit the child on your lap, dip your clean finger in the benadryl, and gently rub on the irritated gum area. Repeat once or twice.

My little guy started teething at 3 months and it took 2 months for his first tooth to come through. We still have many "teething days" where he is just suffering so much (and us along with him).

Along with Hylands, an amber necklace, and various chewing tools (frozen wash cloth etc) I'm trying a teething tea I got the recipe in 'Naturally healthy babies and children' by Aviva Jill Romm

1/2 oz lavender buds
1/2 oz chamomile
1/2 oz lemon balm
1/2 oz catnip

combine all the herbs then use 1 tblsp and steep in a jar for 15-30 mins.

you can give it to baby with a spoon or let them suck on a wash cloth corner dipped in the tea or however you think will work for you. You can also drink it to help stay calm during the challenges of teething. (this tea is also good for colds, coughs,fevers, and much more)

I use the nighttime strength Baby Orajel, even during the day. The tube says you can use it four times a day.

AAARGH! Teething for a couple of weeks now, and the past 2 days have been miserable! In general, I dont like giving conventional meds, but I have been using hylands, teething necklace and vanilla on the gums. The vanilla works really well....for about 4 minutes. But, that is sometimes enough to calm him down so he will eat. Mine is a young teether too, 5 months, but only 3 month adjusted. So, he doesn't really understand chewing on things, and I have to hold teethers in his mouth.
The past 2 days, I broke down and gave him tylenol, and it was totally worth it!
Another thing that helped this morning, was a football hold and walking around. And we have a playground nearby, and he likes to go on the baby swings, I thought he was too young, but it calmed him down too.
Any other ideas? I may try the benadryl.

i also have a teething lo. we haven't used meds (other than hylands teething tabs). we use a lot of the same things that everyone posted. we holds him in the football hold, give him warm baths for the low grade fevers, frozen everything (washclothes, bananas, cooked squash, greenbeans, applesauce), me drinking chamomile tea. but what i have found works the best is his bpa free sippy cup. he loves biting on it. when he is in too much pain to nurse i give him the sippy cup with ice water in it & when his teeth feel better he nurses. the sippy cup has been our lifesaver in the middle of the night when he can't just nurse back to sleep. we just alternate sippy cup/boob until he falls back asleep.
