A dear friend is suffering with PCOS and her symptoms are getting worse. Any helpful info or good links I can give to her? Her HCP is recommending Metformin or BCP which she desperately doesn't want to take.

She also trying to wean herself of anxiety meds what can be helpful with that?

Thanks is advance mamas

I would do metformin over BCP. BCP should be a last resort because they can feed the estrogen dominance of PCOS. They do mask symptoms pretty well though and have to be used if there's uncontrolled bleeding (ask me how I know).

If your friend doesn't want to do metformin, she can do a low carb diet (Atkins is better than South Beach ime for PCOS, especially if weight loss is a goal) and some supplements such as Alpha Lipoic Acid that lower blood sugar.

Metformin is the gold standard for PCOS. It has a long history of use so they know it's effective and safe. Have her ask for the time released version which reduces the GI side effects.

Also, the soulcysters board is a good place for more information. Medifocus sells a PCOS guide that gives a good overview and lists recent major studies for PCOS.

Sorry I don't know anything about anxiety meds.
