Yes, most nights we eat as a family. On Wednesday nights DH goes for a long run after work so the kids and I eat without him, and some Thursday nights I go out and DH and the kids eat without me, but other than that we almost always eat together.
DH gets home at 4:30, so I'll start making dinner shortly after and we usually eat around 5:30. I give DH a heads-up 5 minutes before dinner is ready, and he'll clear the table of the detritus of the day, pour drinks for everyone, and have DS set out utensils and napkins. It used to be that none of that happened until I was dishing up the plates, but I finally explained that I put a lot of effort into planning and cooking meals and I don't want to eat them cold, so we worked out the 5-minute thing.
I put most of the serving dishes out on the table so that seconds are easy to dish up, and the kids know that if they finish their milk they can get up and get water from the fridge dispenser, so DH and I only need to get up if there's a spill or something. [Although despite all that, DH manages to find an average of 3 reasons (I kept a log one week
) to get up during dinner -- to turn on music, to put his phone on the charger, to get a vitamin, etc. It drives me nuts!]
