variations in weight gain

This maybe totally stupid but I have been wondering: If a baby is breastfeeding 'well' (as in good latch, decent milk transfer, frequent feedings etc) how can 2 babies vary so wildly on weight gain?

My friend had a baby just 1 week after I had my daughter, my daughter gained 9oz this week, where as her baby gained almost a whole pound, how does that happen? presumably they have similar sized stomachs, feed about the same amount etc...

If two people are eating well, how can they grow to different sizes?

Genetics, and a thousand other variables.
