Vitamin E?

I bought some vitamin E today because my midwife was telling me how it is helps prevent miscarraige, helps the placenta attach properly, aids in softening ligaments, and helps prevent varicose veins and hemmorhoids. Then *after* I buy it I decide to look online and find articles on how too much Vitamin E can cause heart defects and miscarraige...I know too much of any vitamin is not a good thing. I'm thinking of taking 1 400 IU softgel per week? Or would that even be too much? I just don't know if it's something to be avoided as much as possible or what

I'm sure you'll get varying opinions, but honestly, before I read what you looked up online, I was thinking the same thing.

Vitamin E, is known to thin blood and one of those things you should discontinue before surgery. If you did start to bleed for some reason too much vitamin E could cause you to bleed heavier.

If you have a history of m/c or blood clots, maybe, but honestly most women don't supplement with all these extra things and do just fine.

Hmm, well, I've never heard of vitamin E being recommended during early pregnancy for those reasons. Are you for some reason more at risk for having a miscarriage or any of these other problems? Or is this just a general recommendation that your midwife always gives? Vitamin E in general is a great supplement with many health benefits. However, it does seem to be a little controversial to take during pregnancy (especially if you're taking a supplement in addition to what you already get in a prenatal vitamin). Personally, this is not something I would choose to add an additional supplement of at this time. My prenatal has vitamin E in it, as do most of them I am quite sure. I would recommend talking to your midwife about it a bit more before committing to take it, and if it's something you're not comfortable with, then I wouldn't worry about taking it.

when I looked into it I didn't find much that made me want to not take it- in fact I have been taking it fairly faithfully for about 4 months because I thought I was getting vericose veins. Whatever it was has cleared up for me so I barely take it any more but I was taking as much as I think 800 units/day as per recommendations.
