Nickname for Jamison?

Jamison (probably Jamison Nola) remains at the top of our list short list of four and I'm wondering what y'all think of the nickname Masie or Maisie for Jamison.

We don't like Jamie as a nickname, and are trying to come up with others. I really liked Maisie for a full first name, but DP didn't, so I'm wondering if using it as a nickname for Jamison could be a good compromise.

I know Masie/Maisie is not a perfect derivative of Jamison in any sense, but some nicknames simply aren't, right? I.e. Jack for John, Chas for Charles, Libby or Bess for Elizabeth, etc.

I love Maisie as a name and I think it could work as a nn for Jamison, though it is a bit of a stretch.

My take on nns is that you don't need to "force" them or plan it out too much in advance - they will come soon enough once you meet your baby. You'll start calling her all sorts of cute names, some derivatives of her actual first name and some completely out of left field. Soon enough something will stick and it will be the perfect nn. (To the parents anyway, not sure what my son, Henry Thomas, is going to think of being called Hennypants-Tom-Tom when he's 18!)

It's a bit of a stretch, but for nicknames almost anything can go.

One thing, though, is that if she's going to GO by Masie...how long will that go on? If you would really not rather call her Jamison, or have her known by Jamison/Jamie, then I would avoid the name. As she gets older, other people and her own choices are going to probably change what she's called.

It also might be nice for her to have a nickname that starts with her first initial. I was an E name with a very long-lasting B nickname (essentially my name), and it always annoyed me.

Masie is an adorable nickname, though. I love nicknames for girls that end in "sie."

honestly, I am not a fan of son names for girls as it means son of so and so... jamison, addison, son of james, son of adam etc.

The question is not really whether you dig Jamison for a girl name (we definitely like it... it doesn't have to be interpreted as literally "son of" so much as "child of" and besides, the James part honors DP's dad, who is the most incredible person we know) it's about what ya'll think of Maisie/Masie as a nickname for Jamison, or if you have other thoughts about nicknames for Jamison.

To answer RedOakMama's question, we would still also be fine with calling her or her going by Jamison, we just don't particularly like Jamie as a girl nickname is all.

And of course, she will definitely call herself whatever she or her friends deem is "cool" at some point in life. No getting around that, regardless of what WE decide to call her. Lol. I'm Lindsay and grew up with my family calling me Lindso FOREVER.

I did NOT go by Lindso at school, and would give my dad "that look" if he used it when my friends were around.

Not a fan of Seana. It's similar to my maiden last name that started with that sound, and I have a complicated relationship/set of emotions related to my maiden last name. Good suggestion, though!

Have you thought about using the middle name James? We're using it for our daughter-to-be, also to honor a James we loved.

...I think it sounds beautiful. I especially like Sophie James and Nola James, as I think the feminine first name is balanced well by the masculine name, and I think the "Ames" sound goes really well with the softer sound of Sophie and Nola.

I agree that just using James as a middle name would work. My first daughter is Bailey Ramone because Joey Ramone died when I was pregnant (and I was DEVASTATED!!)

I definitely like James as a girl mn. We have considered it, also to honor a family member.

For nicknames, I really do agree that they evolve on their own. DD1 has two nicknames--one a mispronunciation of her first name and one a play on her mn. We had no intention of calling her anything other than her given name because it is short and simple, but these two surfaced, and I quite often use the one from her mn.

If you love Jamison, then I say use it and see what pops up for a nickname.

(FWIW, we are in nickname hell for naming this kid as well--we love Theodore but can't agree on which way to shorten it. And our families (moms) prefer different nicknames too. It's SO frustrating!)

Forgive the free association with Jamison, but this is what we did when we were trying to figure out my first DD's nickname. Her full name is Genevieve and I did NOT want her going by Jen, Jenny, Ginny, etc. It took awhile but we finally agreed on Genna as the nn, and she is just as much a Genna (pronounced just like Jenna, with a G) as a Genevieve. So...

Jasi/Jaisie (not half bad...at all...what think you?)

Anyway, to answer your actual question, yes, I do like Maisie as a nn. Isn't this name thing the absolute pits sometimes??? Talk about pressure! LOL!!!!

One of the reasons that I liked my daughter's name is the possibilities of nicknames. Lorelei... so she can be eli, lola, lore, etc. Also Lori and Laura...but I'm not allowing anybody to call her that. If she chooses to use those as nicknames, that's her choice. But it won't be my idea!

OK- well, I LOVE James as a middle name. I love the previous suggestion of something more feminine as the first name and the middle name being James. Personally, I think Sophie is ADORABLE. Sophie James is so flowy. My other favorites (including more Irish ones)-- Clara James, Colleen James, Fiona James, Maisie James, Teagan James, Noleen James (nn Nola).

I don't understand why you're planning a nickname. If you go to all that trouble of choosing a name, why wouldn't you just want to call her by it?

(Family nicknames that just come up, like "Little Mister Chickenpants" are another matter.)

I really like Jamison and Maisie, but I'm not sure Maisie works great as a nn for Jamison. I have a full name I've never gone by and a "planned nickname". It was one of our decisions on naming to intentionally not choose names with the intent of a permanent nick name. We're stuck on this debate right now though, because DH really likes Emerson, and I don't want the baby called Emme all the time! Best of luck with naming! It's hard!

I can only view Maisie as a diminutive of Margaret... sorry! I agree though that James would make a pretty awesome middle name for a girl.

I think a nn gets to be whatever you want it to be. I think Maisie works fine as a nn for Jamison.

However, my opinion is that A) it's always better to let the nick name come on it's own. I'm not sure why people chose one name with the intention of calling their child something completely different. B) If you don't want her to be called Jamie, you shouldn't name her Jamison. Period. She will be called Jamie and you'll have to resist that nn on a constant basis. You can't really control what people will nn her and Jamie is the most assumed nn for Jamison. We've had to veto a few names we loved just because we couldn't stand the thought of people using a certain nn and we'd rather not spend years trying to discourage someone from calling a child named Benjamin Ben (just as an example). If I remember correctly, you had some other names on your list you really loved, right? I'd say this little situation with the name Jamison is enough to put it at the bottom of the list, or consider it as a middle name instead.

I have a Benjamin who is 5 and he is ALWAYS Benjamin and never Ben. It's not been a big deal. For activities and preschool we just made sure we were clear to the teachers, and when the kids heard them call him that, they do too. I think the same will happen in school. And when/if he's ready to go with a short name it'll happen. DH has a long name too, and he never chose to shorten it, and people respect that.

Point being, don't let fear of the nn potential stop you.
