Hi there,

I was wondering how your kindergarten kids are enjoying Handwriting Without Tears? My son HATES Explode the Code. I understand, it is VERY repetitive, since he picks new things up easily. I want to encourage his love of learning and do not want to force anything with him, (I am homeschooling him in order to avoid that). Our homeschool charter calls Handwriting without Tears, Handwriting WITH Tears, so I would like to know your experiences. Also, I would LOVE recommendations of fun writing stuff, (he is starting to read a few small words).

We got HWOT because that's what DD's pre-K school used so she requested it. Does she love it? Hardly. She would much rather just write notes, but her handwriting has deteriorated since leaving pre-K. So, I am feeling guilty about it and feel we need to use it more regularly. She just really dislikes workbooks of any kind so I just need to find more creative ways of using it. (She really did not like ETC either!)

DS uses HWOT and also some ETC, he prefers the HWOT and doesn't really care for ETC.

My kids have enjoyed HWT. Pretty easy and straightforward.

My girls don't really care for HWOT but their complaint is with the dullness of the pages in the workbooks. DD1 is going to be doing their firt cursive book, and dd2 will do the K printing book again, while dd3 does their pre-k book (if I feel like buying it, I haven't decided yet really) I've played with switching to A Reason For Handwriting, but we're not too sure yet because I have the HWOT workbooks dd1 and dd2 will do already.

Oh, I should mention that DD requested the cursive book and she does actually like it a lot more!

Those whose kids didn't like what did your kids enjoy?

I ask because I don't think either of my boys are wired to love handwriting practice. I like that HWOT is fast and, so, relatively painless. They did like the Pre-K stuff. K program is going fine--as I said it's fast. But if there's some engaging handwriting program out there I'd love to know what it is.

my son like HWT. we do 1 page a day & i don't use the TM. in the beginning, he used playdough and the letter tiles - but now he just writes. we plan to continue with HWT for grade 1 next year, as well as some light copywork (a sentence). he also love writing on a magnadoodle, dry erase board, and his favorite is writing in shaving cream. those might be some fun things to add in with your ds.

My girls prefer our free journaling assignments, practicing letters and words on the dry erase board, and writing on pretty paper. lol So we add those to HWT right now, and I have no clue what we'll be doing after we finish the HWT books I have right now. I personally love HWT, but they just don't like how plain the workbooks are. They also have been known to do 3 or 4 pages at one time because they are so simple.

We're considering switching to RFH but no clue yet. We'll decide later, when we finish the HWT books we have on hand already.

I'm thinking of trying it as a supplement to our handwriting. It looks like they use a combination of drawing and handwriting exercises. My DD1 loves to draw but hasn't taken to any handwriting instruction. It may be a stretch, but I'm going to try it!

LOL. i'm such a dork! that's the series you are talking about! so i'll just delete my post i'll just say YES, i agree with you. it's a great recommendation & we own it and have used it with great success.
