Microscope question

My mom bought this: http://www.amazon.com/My-First-Lab-D.../dp/B000NOU54O for my 9yo. We set it up this morning, reading all the instructions, and the light that you turn on underneath is so bright that you can't even look through the eyepiece without hurting your eyes, and you certainly can't see anything on the slide.

Are we missing something? Help!

Having used many microscopes in my line of work....I can say that all have a light adjuster. Check to make sure that you can't turn the knob to make it a bit dimmer.

The only light adjustment I see is set at the lowest setting.
