Yes, well we all know that pasteurized milk never gets contaminated with anything and all food approved by the government is perfectly safe (except peanut butter, spinach, lunch meat, beef, anything in a can, etc.).

GRRRR!!! Insanity. Well, how did we ever survive before pasteurization.

The (pasteurized) dairy industry doesn't want bad PR if anybody gets sick from raw milk? If it happened, I'm sure the press would be all over how the only reason these people got sick was because they were crazy enough to drink raw milk, and the pasteurized dairy industry would get more customers. They're not concerned about what will happen if people get sick. They're worried about what will happen if people don't get sick: they might lose customers.

What would cause this to happen? I have never heard of this before?

ut Laurie Kyle, an organic dairy farmer from Elkhorn, had a different perspective. Her 13-year-old son developed Guillain-Barré syndrome from drinking unpasteurized milk.

"It almost killed my son," Kyle said. "I am a nutritionist, too, so it's frustrating for me to hear educated people saying this is going to make them healthier."

In that particular case, this is the problem:

It's basically an organic CAFO. The cows are confined and grain fed, including donuts and cookies. Obviously, that destroys their guts.

Her raw milk was tainted which is why her child developed Guillain-Barre. According to my facebook friend "Raw Milk," Laurie Kyle's blog says that she gives her cows bread and chocolate chip cookies. Garbage in, garbage out. If her cows were pastured and eating grass like they should be, the chances of her son getting sick would be very slim.

How are they a certified organic dairy if they are feeding bread and cookies? How does that work? Do the bread and cookies have to be organic? I thought to get (and maintain) certification you had to show that the feed was certified organic and I would assume that would be nearly impossible if you were feeding anything other than grass or organic grain.

Such a shame! It's easier for kids to get prescription drugs than it is for us to get raw milk! And, as far as I'm concerned, raw spinach is no less dangerous...oh and lets's add lettuce, peanut butter, tomatoes, etc. Geesh.

I imagine it was either a mistake by the reporter or she called herself "organic." She also claims that rbGH is safe. I'm glad she's not my nutritionist.

I don't know how common the donut thing is but they would have to be organic donuts for an organic dairy

On the GBS complication from campylobacter, it's a 1 in 1,000 chance if you have a campy infection. Quite a few raw milk dairies have had campy outbreaks, including Organic Pastures and Alexandre Eco Dairy here in California. I don't if Alexandre was pasture-based but its owners are WAPF chapter leaders so I doubt the cows were getting many donuts. In any case, campy is out there in the world and GBS is 1/1,000 if you have campy.

You are far more likely to get campy from undercooked chicken than from raw milk, but chicken isn't usually linked to outbreaks because people tend to eat it well cooked.

I'm not sure exactly what campy is?

Yep. The lady has a blog of their dairy farm, it's pretty horrifying.

And seriously, I just can not get over the fact that according to the government, I can sit and drink a fifth of whiskey and smoke two packs of cigarettes, but I can't drink REAL milk because it's "dangerous."

Ha! I know! Those were almost my exact words I used to comment on an article from the dairy council thanking Gov Doyle for vetoing the bill. Great minds think alike!
