New DX: SCOLIOSIS..... what next?

We added a new DX to our ever-growing list....Scoliosis. My almost 14 month old has freaking scoliosis, so now we are waiting for our ortho consult. Anyone else out there with a DC with scoliosis? If so what treatment option have you gone with?

I am beginning to feel like I should start listing the specialist we don't see, rather than the ones we do see.

Here is some options that Hanger Orthotics offers. I am not sure what they would do in such a young child or if would be the same.

I'm not sure if this would be of any use to you but I had/have scoliosis and have had two spinal fusions. I would be happy to weigh in if that perspective would be helpful.

Our good friends have a son with infantile scoliosis. Serial casting is a new treatment that can be life-saving and save kids from surgeries. It is very specialized and right now only done at a few Shriner's hospitals. Eg, our friends in LA have to fly to Utah, but their son's curvature has gone from 60 degrees to 20 degrees over the past year. A lot of pedi orthos apparently do not know much about it, so if you decided to pursue it, you would probably have to be very proactive. Anyway, here is a link to an article.

Thanks so much, as you can tell I was still in the "freak out" stage when I posted. The orthd doc we have been referred to does work at the Shriner's in houston (where they do serial casting), and we already have an orthotist for our AFOs, so I know we will get through it. We go see physical medicine & rehab tomorrow, and we will see what they say (we can't get into the ortho doc until August).

Thanks again and I will keep you updated. I would still love any advice that anyone who has been through this may have.

I have scoliosis too, was diagnosed in a routine school screening. I have a mild case, Shriners would watch it annually until I was an adult, in my case no treatment was necessary. Adjustments from a chiro or massage help, a lot. I hope he has a milder form than I do. ((((Hugs to you mama))))

I had/have still some degree scoliosis. But when you're dealing with infantile (vs. adolescence) it's a whole different ballgame. It sounds like you're in good hands? I was on another board back in I think 2005 or 2006 when with someone whose child was (successfully) serial casted. I did a lot of research on it back then to understand what they were doing. Do you know his curve and if it's progressing? I'm thinking (hoping) it's not progressive since they are waiting until August? If it is progressing do tons of research into this including into casting so you can advocate for what you believe is best for him.
