mattress on floor for newborn?

i just gave birth to my 3rd child. although we co-slept with our first two, i was going to try to keep this baby in a bassinet beside our bed.

I am worried because i'm a bit older now (35 yrs) and deal with lack of sleep worse than when i had my first 2. also i have developed a hearing loss in my right ear and am worried if lying on my left side, i will not be able to hear the baby.... just thought this was safer for us.

anywho- after only 2 nites at home i found this isn't going to work too well. we started co-sleeping again and it's great! i actually sleep! the only thing is, DH is on the couch because him and i are not comfortable with him in the bed too.

our solution is to put a mattress on the baby's bedroom floor and for me to sleep either with her part of the nite and with DH.

does anyone do this? i think it'll work out well when she's older and can sleep a while longer without feeding.

does anyone have any tips/suggestions? i'm looking for a new mattress but not sure what type to get... something firm is my only thought.

thanks in advance,
christine

hearing -

dont worry about not hearing ur baby. im profoundly deaf and sleep with my first daughter (almost 3 yrs old) since birth and now second one (around one week old.)
i usually put my finger or hand on her body to feel her movements.
i used to use a flasher to signal me when shes crying but i stopped because it got annoying to the husband.

the toddler learned quickly when she was a baby to move around for milk. as for infant, got to feel her body as often as possible.

congrats on ur baby.

I too have a hearing loss and can say that cosleeping is fantastic! I would feel the movement and it would wake me. Like the pp said, they learnt early to latch on themselves for milk. I did use a matress on the floor of our room, but not until 9 months. You could get a queen or king sized bed... thats what we did, and it makes it much easier to fit the hubby in the bed too.
