do most of you start "the year" in september? - Page 2

We are pretty much going year round. So far, it's been 'starting' in August/September, taking a bit of a break around November, starting back up and continuing until about April, then starting back up again from May until about the end of July.
Our 'school years' change over in August/September for the most part, which is pretty much in line with our public schools.

We don't really differentiate between "school years" at our house. We unschool so everything just kind of flows from one thing to the next. Though we do tend to have more structured schedules during the school year - just because that's how some of the programs we like end up being scheduled.

We officially start the new year in september for several reasons, but we do school year round.

Like someone else mentioned, there's a ton of back to school hype around here. It's a simple enough thing to start our new year when the other kids go back to school.

We also have to report to the school district, record attendence etc.

SO many of our outside activities go on the school schedule as well.

That's not to say I wait to start new material. We started K when DD was ready, and we started using 1st grade materials in some subjects when she was ready for those.

We've been unschooling up til this point (dd1 is only 4). But we will be going a little more formal starting in September.

The only reason for this is because I'm due August 21st and we are planning a cross country move in the next month or two. After that we'll see how it goes.

We don't. Last year (our first year) we started in August because the schools here did. This year, we're starting in July while it's still incredibly hot out so that we can be done (with state requirements) in April/May when it's beautiful out and spring fever has set in. (And we technically school all year, with a light review and focus on literature/art during the summer ... )
