Looking for literary resources for History

I am looking for something to help guide me w/ history. I like using a literary based approach- and also want it to follow a general timeline- w/ hands on activities as well- not just coloring sheets and such that both the kids and I find lame. Something more like lapbook kind of projects. Something that is obviously not anti-Catholic (so nothing from places like BJU, Abeka, etc)or nothing that preaches macroevolution either- although microevolution is good.

Also, I like lots of ideas but my approach is not school at home. I keep somehow finding these great books from the library that are historical fiction and nonfiction for the kids and thinking if I could somehow incorporate those in some kind of order that it would be a much more meaningful and interesting way to do history with them. I have read reviews of various "programs" out there but I haven't found what I am looking for yet as far as I can tell-

Does anyone understand what I am looking for and know of what I can find that kind of matches that? How about resources to look up picture books/chapter books that corresponds w/ various historical events- engaging books but also are good literature as well.

In All Through the Ages Christine Miller draws from a host of publishers, curricula, book lists, and her own experience to create a huge list of "living" books for history, geography, science, and the arts study. The book begins with suggestions on how to use the book, but more importantly, recommendations as to how to teach history chronologically through twelve years of homeschool using a literature approach. Mrs. Miller also points out the method for and benefit of studying "great books" with older children and as an adult. She summarizes Mortimer Adler's technique for reading a book
I have found this and it looks like it will be a good resource

I am also looking at this Charlotte Mason guide. Specifically this guide as a start that seems to weave biblical with the history and some projects as well.
