Yet another name thread

We found out last week that we're expecting a little BOY! Dh and I were both convinced we were having another girl, so we hadn't really discussed boy names.

Anyway, dh is really pulling for Finnegan. I like the name too, and can't think of anything "better." I keep finding myself thinking of him as Finnegan (we'd probably call him Finn for short). So I think the first name is pretty well settled.

I'm having trouble with middle names. I really want Ronald in there, it's not a name I like, but that was dh's father's name (he died when dh was 10) and I think it's important to honor him (plus I know dh's aunt, his father's sister, would be really touched). Dh himself has two middle names (Kenneth James) and I'd like to include one of his names to pass on (I gave dd3 my first name for her middle name, which is also my mother's middle name). Was that confusing?

So anyway, these are the options-

Finnegan Ronald James H.
Finnegan James Ronald H.

or drop the second middle name and just go with

Finnegan Ronald H.

I really like the way Finnegan James sounds. Ronald doesn't really seem to fit well no matter what, but like I said, it's a family name. Thoughts?

I agree it doesn't sound ideal, but having a name that honors a loved one is pretty cool. Finnegan Ronald is nice.

Could you use a variant of Ronald or something that incorporates that name? Ronn and Ronan come to mind.

Ronald itself is Scottish by way of Scandinavia (Rognvaldr...the ruler of decision, judgement power) and its components are "regin/rogn" for advice/judgement and "valdr" for ruler/power. From that, Regin (a legit Scandinavian name) would be a nice name:

Finnegan Regin (REE-ghin)

The current Scandinavian Ronald is: Ragnvald (RAGN-valt).

Or, you could pick another Scandinavian almost-Ronald and go for Roald: RO-ahl.

As for the picks, if you're going to do two middle names, I think Finnegan James Ronald sounds best, since Finnegan James sounds good together and James Ronald sound good together. Is your H name short or long?

Honestly, this is my favorite because of the meaning. It does not matter if it "flows" really... Ronald is important to you AND to your DH. You said that you wanted something of his name to pass on, well don't forget that his LAST name is given to your baby! If you MUST do the three names, well, personally the three names together is quite long, but it is doable. I do like Finnegan Ronald James H. better.

I'm in a similar name situation. We are most likely going with Griffin for the first name (Finnegan is a close second) and my husband wants to use his middle name but I wanted to use my deceased grandfather's middle name (or possibly something else). My dh said he was fine using two middle names with his being second but I'm still not sold on the idea. I agree with the pp that said the baby will get your dh's last name I'm going to tell my dh that when he gets home, lol. So back to the point...if you do decide to use both middle names I like Finnegan James Ronald. I also like the idea of using a name close to Ronald to honor the person instead of the actual name. I'd like to use my grandfather's name Lyle (if it's a boy) but I'm having a hard time coming up with anything that goes whether using it as a first or middle name. Some names are just tricky!

Anyway-- our second choice name for DS was Finnis (after John Finnis, the Catholic philosopher), and we would have called him Finn.

I like Finnegan Ronald. Save James for the next baby

Does DH's dad have a middle name you might like more? My DH's father is deceased but if we were to name our DS after him we would use his middle name (David) which I like better than his first name (Lawrence) and I think it still holds significance. Just a thought.

Thanks again for the suggestions, I brought them up with dh and I think we've settled on Finnegan James Ronald H.

Dh's father's middle name was Dean, so...we weren't keen on James Dean as his middle names

I think Finnegan Ronald James sounds nice! most people barely use there middle name so flow isn't that huge of a deal
