HFCS isn't baaaaad, go ahead and have some

I just saw a commercial on tv with two boys having cereal and talking about how the HFCS in their cereal isn't as bad as people make it out to be. And then there was this link http://sweetsurprise.com/
The corn lobby must be scrambling!
Comparing it to table sugar in order to say both disaccharide sucrose and HFCS are fine. Hahaha. Has anyone claimed table sugar is good stuff?

It all comes down to money money money, doesn't it?

Oh, yeah - I've seen those ads on TV and in magazines. I don't think people are buying it. At least I hope not.

The corn lobby would just love hearing my 4 year old DD in the grocery store looking at cereals we don't buy and saying that corn syrup is bad or asking if things she thinks look interesting have corn syrup in them.

Since we're not big milk drinkers and I'm not a person who gets into substitutes for foods that we don't generally eat, we don't have cereal much. I buy maybe 1/2 gal of organic milk a month, sometimes 2 half-gallons. But there are weeks at a time when we don't have milk in our fridge and we don't do soy or rice or any of the other milks.
I do sometimes buy junk candy though. ick ick HFCS. The kids would prefer it if I bought only jolly beans and vegan gummi bears and sunspires but I can't afford that!

Oh no, they are. When I was in Iowa last week they were talking about it on the radio with some corn farmers, a NUTRITIONIST (who clearly works for the lobby), and some callers. People really think it's great for the local economy and the same thing only cheaper than sugar.

Is there something much worse about HFCS than table sugar? I thought it was bad for all the same reasons table sugar is bad (no micronutrients, spikes your blood glucose and insulin secretion, etc.). I avoid HFCS for the same reason I avoid regular sucrose.

it's bad for the same reasons as sugar plus all the mercury in it, plus it has a totally different effect in the body (from the fructose) which I don't recall exactly what it does but is incredibly hard for one's body to deal with.

yes I saw a popsicle ad. they are scrambling. it is about $. The corn is GMO, this is by far the worst part to me. here is a FB group about banning it in case anyone is interested. http://www.facebook.com/pages/THE-BA...6064752?ref=ts We eat candy, but allergen free, non gmo candy. and I mostly avoid corn, along with dairy, gluten and soy

Research has shown that it is *worse* than table sugar.

A Princeton University research team has demonstrated that all sweeteners are not equal when it comes to weight gain: Rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same.

it also promotes industrial monoculture. (not that sugar doesn't).
we abstain b/c of mercury and the fact that it is so highly processed. it's good in a way b/c it keeps us from buying lots of processed crap, though.
oddly enough, i read something the other day (can't recall to share tho) that the companies/corporations are listening. heinz, for example, has come out with a non hfcs ketchup now, and other brands are following suit. they're eliminating it from more items these days.

This is from the Princeton link in this thread:
First, sucrose is composed of equal amounts of the two simple sugars -- it is 50 percent fructose and 50 percent glucose -- but the typical high-fructose corn syrup used in this study features a slightly imbalanced ratio, containing 55 percent fructose and 42 percent glucose. Larger sugar molecules called higher saccharides make up the remaining 3 percent of the sweetener. Second, as a result of the manufacturing process for high-fructose corn syrup, the fructose molecules in the sweetener are free and unbound, ready for absorption and utilization. In contrast, every fructose molecule in sucrose that comes from cane sugar or beet sugar is bound to a corresponding glucose molecule and must go through an extra metabolic step before it can be utilized.

How our bodies break down food is very important and it looks like we can't process the sugars in HFCS like we can in table sugar. There are similar processing problems with Splenda.

Hunts ketchup is eliminating it as well

I am glad to see some companies are listening.

There are some spoofs on youtube

It's all I could think of every time I saw that commercial.

Off to watch the spoofs!

This was a pretty good talk about sugar and HFCS and how each metabolizes differently. I learned a lot. HFCS bypasses your body's ability to tell when it's full AND turns more directly to fat than sugar. It's a long talk, but it's worth watching, imo.
