Which vaccines shed

Can someone tell me which vaccines shed?

How long would you avoid a baby who has had vaccines?

DD's first vaccines will be in two weeks, but lots of our friends don't vax, so I'm trying to figure out how long to avoid the playgroup and our best friend whose baby is mostly unvaxed.

(And please please please let's not turn this into a crucifixion of me for vaccinating, or a place to try to talk me out of it... let's just remember that we all make the choices that are appropriate for us. It's the choice I've made. )

MMR
varicella (chickenpox)
and where the live polio vaccine is still given, OPV

the only one where I'd be really concerned about avoiding people without immune problems would be rotavirus

It's interesting, though, because the birth center was going to give me a new MMR, because my ruebella titer came back iffy. But wouldn't that be dangerous to the baby, if she's never had an MMR?

the unvaxed children will likely be healthy enough to not be in grave danger after exposure to your child. as a nonvaxing parent, it never crosses my mind to ask my friends when and which vaxes their kids have had so we can stay away. if i was that scared of VPDs, i would just vax. in my case, most of my friends have realized how risky vaxing is, so they dont anymore, but if i was surrounded by vaxed kids, i still wouldnt worry about it.

I would wait on getting your own MMR until you stop breastfeeding. MMR does shed and the rubella portion seems to be especially dangerous to infants.

You are not in danger from any of those three illnesses at this moment. You aren't planning to get pregnant again immediately, right? So you can wait until a few months before you start trying to conceive.

Nope, I'm not planning on any more children for several years. I'm cool with waiting on the MMR for me.

Good! Vaccinating moms after childbirth is one of those public health convenience things. Grab and jab em when you have em.

Individuals have a right to figure out what works best for them, rather than the convenience of the public health system.

Another question for all of you vaccine experts... So you say the chicken pox vax sheds.

I've never had chicken pox. I have had one dose of the vaccine many years ago (soon after it became available, IIRC). I never knew that it was a two dose thing until many years later. I'm wondering if I have anything to worry about for me when she gets her chicken pox vax. That's actually one of the vaccines I'd really rather NOT give her. But I can't really get an exemption for just one vaccine, and all the daycares I'm looking at require it.

P.S. I forgot to add: I have advice about your original question. No matter what you end up doing (sequestering DD, limiting contact, etc) I would let your unvaxxed mama friends know that she's getting vaxxed. If their kids get sick they may blame it on your kid, whether it's true- or even possible- or not. That way they're responsible to keep their child away and if their child gets sick they can't blame you. You gave them fair warning.

I have never heard of that happening. In fact, it's usually the reverse. If a vaxed kid gets sick, everyone points the finger at the non-vaxed one... even if that kid didn't show any signs of carrying the illness.

I could see it happening both ways. I'm not trying to villify any one side, I'm just saying that it's probably better if she covers her butt. I do a lot more vaxes than my friends who do no vaxxing. If my kid got vaxxed, shed, and their kids got sick, I'm pretty sure they'd be okay with it. I don't think they'd make a fuss at all, just have a "Oh well, kids get sick" attitude. But I'd still tell them ahead of time. Just out of consideration and to avoid potential problems.

Isn't it strange how some people only think that unvaccinated people not showing symptoms are the only ones spreading disease?

Well, I imagine it *usually* happens the other way, because in most situations the non-vaxxed kid is in the minority. But in my particular circle of friends my vaxxed DD will be the minority, I believe. But yeah, I'll definitely tell them. I just figured it would be nice to know when it might be a shedding issue, so I don't get too disappointed to miss playgroup that week.

Oh yes, and I haven't asked about the chicken pox thing to my HCP yet. I hadn't really thought of it in that light until just now. We have discussed doing a titer on me to see if I'm immune, so I think I'll bring that back up before she gets her varicella vax
