Did something very stupid

I had eggs Benedict for brunch! I'm 7 weeks along, and my brain went on vacation. I knew about sushi, but I did not think about runny yolks. The risk of contracting listeriosis is very low, but it IS there.

Should I tell my doc? Anybody been here before?

I would try not to worry about it, and I wouldn't bother to mention it unless you start to feel sick. I periodically eat eggs sunny side up with runny yolks, although I only use pastured eggs of my own. I also drink raw milk, which some people would say is a big no-no!

Don't worry. Seriously. I'd be more worried about getting struck by lightning, or hit by a car, than by getting a serious illness from normal food while pregnant.

I'm still eating cookie dough and cake batter while pregnant. Sushi, too. We are WAY too worried about foodborne illness in this country...especially from normal, healthy, well-prepared foods. I blame Dateline.

Thanks ladies!I agree with you, I know the odds are teeny tiny. The only reason I might think of mentioning it to my doc is because sometimes listerosis occurs without symptoms, and you might get a very rude surprise later.

Well..........I didn't even know we weren't supposed to have runny yolks, I eat eggs benny all the time (one of my pregnancy cravings, this time and last) and cookie dough.

i love my eggs sunnyside up or over easy and do not avoid it during pregnancy

I also do not avoid deli meat as long as its from the deli I KNOW is very specific about how clean they keep everything... i used to work there and feel very safe with their food... the manager is anal about it all!

Im not worried about lysteria... I AM worried about other illnesses you can get if someone uses the bathroom and does not properly wash their hands (ick!) but I also dont eat meat from delis other than the one I know is strict even when NOT pregnant just because of this worry lol.

I eat runny eggs and drink raw milk as well. I wouldn't worry.

Lone dissenter: I don't know that you need to mention it to your care provider, but I wouldn't do it again. I've avoided runny yolks this entire pregnancy (and my, how I miss them). They're on the list of foods I'm looking forward to eating some time in the next several weeks.

The hollandaise is also a concern, but not any more than the eggs themselves.

I love dippy eggs, and who can resist raw cookie dough?

I also enjoy runny eggs and raw milk over here as well. I wouldn't worry about it.

That's pretty much my answer for everything in life. "It's Dateline's fault I didn't drop off the dry cleaning." "Damn that 48 Hours! They're reason you can't get a taxi on this corner, I just know it!" Totally not joking here. I really do this.

Back on topic! Nothing will keep me from my very lightly poached eggs. I can't eat egg yolks if they're in any way firm. Just . . . bleh.

It's more important, imo to make sure the whites of the egg are thoroughy cooked.

I eat eggs sunny side up almost every day for breakfast when I'm pregnant. I eat a lot of sushi, too. And, if I can squeeze out some extra money for cow share, I'll be drinking raw milk from a local family farm.

Yep, can't resist the cookie dough here either and the only way I'll eat eggs is sunny side up. Not a worry, IMO.

I wouldn't even blink and eye. At this point in time everything you are exposed seems to be a possible trigger for some doom and gloom.

I ate runny eggs yolks all through this last pregnancy ( I can't stand eggs that aren't runny- they taste like cardboard to me). I had no issues. I also ate lunch meat without zapping it in the microwave, feta cheese, and Odwallas (which are supposedly out according to some doctors because they are flash pasteurized and I guess that's not good enough?). Oh, and I also ate rare steak..not sure if that's a "no no" either. The risk of getting sick from most of those things they tell you not to eat is really very small, and even further reduced if you're careful about where your food comes from. It's really your call, some feel comfortable about eating what they want, others are more cautious.

I have eaten lots of runny eggs this pg... but when I eat deli meat I cook till steaming (even if only in the microwave). I figure, the yolk has prob been brought to steaming temps which kills listeria in deli meat

I am probably only concerned about listeria in deli meat because it's been an issue in Canada a few times since I've become pregnant.

I wouldn't be concerned about most other unpasteurized products, but it's hard to come by them anyways!

Have to go eat some runny eggs now YUM

I agree with PPs that the risk is minute. I haven't eaten runny eggs, not craving 'em, but I have been craving and eating sushi, but I trust the restaurant I get it from. And I have eaten deli meat sandwiches here and there. I wouldn't call eating those eggs "very stupid" I would say it's a small risk you took. I guess it wouldn't hurt to mention it to the OB if you're worried. Mmmmm, raw cookie dough!! Now I want some!!

No kidding! And I'm going to go make some runny eggs too!

I regularly make my own sushi from a frozen sushi grade fish source. I've decided to try to not go to a sushi place, since I have more control over the environment that way.

I very happily eat very runny egg yolks, from an egg source I trust.

There is a higher concern for me with processed foods, junk foods, etc. That's stuff is just loaded with junk.
