Did something very stupid - Page 2

Is it weird that I just happen to be sitting here with 3 sunny side up eggs and 3 pieces of toast, munching as I read this?

Seriously I have lost so much weight that anything I can get in me is better then nothing.

I wouldn't worry!

Is it recommended? Well, no.

But I really wouldn't worry about it.

Think about how many times you've been sick from something you ate.

I've had food poisoning once and I am pretty sure it was from doner kebab. It was awful and I wasn't pregnant at the time but that was once in 28 years of eating all sorts of foods that are forbidden during pregnancy.

I am comfortable with eating sushi at a familiar place and runny yolks. My first pregnancy I ate scrambled eggs only, to avoid raw yolks. I am skipping raw shellfish-much more likely to get you sick than raw fish. Cutting out caffeine almost entirely and watching soft cheeses.

Sushi restaurants are heavily regulated and checked on because they serve raw foods. This makes them MUCH safer to eat from than, say, McDonalds. MUCH safer.

Runny yolks, I don't because I have gotten sick from them before I got pregnant. I can only afford store eggs, which has goodness knows what on them.

No problem with medium/rare steaks, since all the 'bad' bacteria are usually on the outside. I would never eat a medium hamburger, for example, 'cuz the bad stuff is ground right into the middle.

Deli meat I only eat at home after microwaving/frying/boiling them.

I think the more processed a food (deli meat, hot dogs, etc) the higher the likelyhood of contamination.

I'm only 8+ weeks along and ate runny eggs last weekend for brunch as well. I was totally ok. I've eaten sushi once (philly roll) as well.... I'm trying not to stress out as much with #2.

I don't care for raw egg besides in cookie dough, but I never give it a second thought even pregnant since I know the farm mine came from. Healthy uncrowded chickens in clean conditions, risks of diseases are very minimal. And boy are the eggs delicious.

I eat runny yolked eggs all the time. I believe they are quite healthy. And the one time I did have terrible food poisoning, I got it from lettuce. So I don't really get hung up on all the dietary "restrictions."

From what I understand (and I am not a doctor/nutritionist/anything else), your listeria risk from runny eggs isn't any bigger than it is from anything else (raw vegetables, pasteurized milk--yep, it's shown up in there). Salmonella is a risk, though, and from what I hear, it doesn't pose a disproportional risk to the fetus--it will just make you miserable in the meantime (and you may need more supportive care than you would normally).

I've had aversions to runny eggs (all eggs for awhile, runny eggs during second-third trimester) so I haven't been eating them but I don't think I'd avoid them completely if I wasn't.

I personally do not believe in abstinence in any form, rather: moderation. There is SO much fear-mongering in pregnancy as to what you can and can't do, should and shouldn't eat, etc. It annoys the crap out of me. Now obviously, I'm not going to take up free climbing and start eating raw sheep's brains for breakfast every day, but I AM going to eat runny eggs when I feel like it, AND a deli meat sandwich if I want, AND indulge in some sushi from time to time, AND enjoy a glass of wine occasionally if the mood takes me. So there! :nana

Personally, I think it's whatever you're comfortable with. I would no more encourage a pregnant woman to behave as I do than I would discourage her from any choice I personally wouldn't make (unless it was obviously hazardous to her or the baby's health, such as drug use or similar). Live and let live, IMHO.

Seriously. I ate over a hundred raw egg yolks when I was pg with ds and also drank many gallons of raw milk. I didn't have any illnesses from it and I didn't even consider it risky. I wasn't even aware I was supposed to avoid deli meats.

I'm pretty much there with you. The only things on my absolutely not list are: illegal drugs, cocktails (the hardest for me!), and raw oysters. I haven't found sufficient evidence to feel safe about the oysters.
