Wild clover - cover crop?

In my garden beds, the wild clover took over a few rows. Last week while I pulled up a fair amount of it, I wondered: is this pretty much what people grow who do cover crops? Was their growth here a good thign? ANyone know about wild clover vs bought clover for a cover crop?

I don't have specific answers per se, but we purposely grew clover and let the natural clover grow (combo) in order to enrich our depleted high alkaline soil back a few years ago. When we wanted to plant flowers the following season, we turned the clover over into the soil instead of removing it. A neighbor expressed concern about clovers coming up all the time and choking off the flowers. Hasn't happened and it has been a few years.
