Vitamin D-3 Supplement suggested?

I took my DD to her first pediatrician visit today. She is 6 days old. I am breastfeeding her and the doc said that the APA now reccomends using a D-3 supplement now. Has anyone heard of this before? I thought breastmilk was complete. I nursed DD1 and she is 4. The doc said it is something that changed since her.

They're just now realizing more and more the importance of Vitamin D for our bodies. Breastmilk is complete as long as you are not deficient in viatmin D.

You can get a test done relatively easily, and if you are within normal range then there is no need to supplement her. If you are deficient though, I would suggest supplementing yourself and in turn, that will supplement her as well.

I was surprised to hear this as well at DS's 2 month visit. If you supplement, I don't suggest using the drops they give you (most likely enfamil's Tri-vi-sol I think) there are better versions that are just plain Vit D you can use yourself or give baby that don't have additives and iffy things in them at most vitamin shops and health food stores.

That said, we live in SC and I have not supplement DS at all; we go out in the sun as much as possible, and we really haven't used sunscreen yet.

If you want to supplement your own D3, I like Carlson's drops. The pricetag seems high until you realize it's got 365 doses in the bottle. I live north enough that I cannot make D myself from sun exposure most of the year.

If you live north of Boston you have a high chance of being low yourself - good idea to get tested anyway! I'm taking vitamin D myself until baby has started solids, then I plan to supplement him as well.
