Sensory FREAK OUT with the kids tonight (funny story)

All 3 of my kids and I have sensory issues, some moderate, some severe, some avoiding, some seeking. They're all so different, I do my best to work with each of them.

We had whipped cream & strawberries & bananas after dinner tonight. I decided to smash my 10 yr old Aspie's leftover cream in his face. He laugh/cried. Ok, we talked about it and got it resolved. He was unhappy, wanted to eat it, I apologized and gave him more.

My 8 yr old came over and I said, "Hey, look..." and smeared whipped cream all over her face!

That just did it! Max thought it was hilarious!!! So then the 2 big kids and I were flinging and smearing whipped cream all over the place! We even smeared it on my dad! Good times!

And THEN I stuck a whipped cream-covered finger in Max's ear. He got me back by doing the same thing! Oh. My. God.

I was so thoroughly grossed out by that!!!! I told him, "I will NEVER do that to you again! EW! Nasty!"

Showers for everyone and then the kids went to bed.

I had no idea how slimy and nasty whipped cream was. BLEH! And this is homemade w/ heavy cream and xylitol!

Now that sounds like fun. My DS and i love water fights, definantly not as messy.

OMG. My ears still have the sensation of whipped cream in them. I am looking forward to summer -- water fights are decidedly less gross.

My son is a seeker. I'd imagine he'd love having anything smashed on him or do it to others. You should see him with shaving cream. He's usually covered by the time they are done playing (and so are the kids next to him).

I thought about shaving cream. I wonder what he would think of that? We'll have to give it a shot soon.

Shaving cream is wonderful and such an easy clean up. You can either just let them spray it all over a table and draw in it or... you can use heavy construction paper and put some on it and let them make pictures out of it.

One time, DS had shaving cream play at school. I hadn't realized it. We got home and all of a sudden, I'm smelling my late father's shaving cream. My heart went into my throat, I got all teary eyed and then it dawned on me. I asked DS if he got to play with shaving cream and he happily said "yes!".

That sounds like a ball! But you're right, the whipcream in the ear sounds awful!

Sounds like fun!

I would so freak out with whipped cream in my ear!

Our OT used to have a day in the summer where the kids would play with shaving cream. It was amazingly fun and really good sensory input. Definitely something to think about trying outside this summer. (I wonder how I can get really cheap, environmentally friendly shaving cream -- we'd need enough for the whole neighborhood, and there's a lot of them.)
