Pine nuts = bitter taste in mouth??

So, on friday I made scallops w/ broccoli & mushrooms, and the recipe called for some pine nuts, so I bought them and tossed them in, thinking nothing of it. Then, starting yesterday I had an awful bitter taste in my mouth that I just can't get to go away... a bit of googling came up with some link to pine nuts, and when I looked on wikipedia it has this:

A small minority of pine nuts can cause taste disturbances, developing 1–3 days after consumption and lasting for days or weeks. A bitter, metallic taste is described. Though very unpleasant, there are no lasting effects. This phenomenon was first described in a scientific paper in 2001.[12] Some publications have made reference to this phenomenon as "pine mouth".[13] This is a relatively new phenomenon and appears to be most common in nuts coming from China. It has been theorized that the nut trees are absorbing something and passing it on to the nuts, or the nuts themselves are being treated with something before packaging. It is also possible that the nuts have spoiled and are rancid, causing the metallic taste disturbance. Also, it has been hypothesized that this bitter side effect is caused by an allergy that some people may have to pine nuts, but this does not explain the recent appearance of this syndrome. Metallic taste disturbance known as metallogeusia, are reported 1–3 days after ingestion, being worse on day 2 and lasting for up to 2 weeks. Cases were self-limited and resolve without treatment.[14]

Has anyone else ever heard of this?! I'm not sure where pine nuts I have are from, and as ds2 is asleep on me atm, I can't check now... but wow. How freaking wierd!! I certainly won't be eating any more of them!! I just hope it goes away soon... some of the other causes of bitter taste were/are absolutely terrifying!!

That's strange. I haven't had that happen and I eat a fair amount of pine nuts sometimes (it goes in waves, lol). I've been known to grab a handful and shove it in my mouth. I usually get it from Costco, but I don't recall where they come from.

I hate pine nuts, and have had this happen to me. Blech! They're the only nut/seed I avoid 100%.

I had this happen to me once, I googled and found the same info, only i couldn't remember eating anything with pine nuts. It lasted 2-3 days then disappeared.

I've had pine nuts many times since then and have never experienced that again.

That's creepy and crazy! I have had pine nuts themselves taste bitter, when they were rancid, but nothing that lasted. I hope it goes away quickly for you!

I'm not a big fan of pine nuts. I usually sub walnuts. walnuts are good in things like pesto, too

Not to scare you or anything, but I've heard of that as a pregnancy symptom.

But no, I've never had that happen to me from pine nuts, and we eat them pretty frequently.

Good to know about the walnuts, I definetly will *NOT* be eating anymore pine nuts anytime soon (I chucked the ones I had this morning - and yes, they were indeed from China!!).

And yeah, I'm pretty sure I've heard it as a pregnancy symptom too - when I initially told dh about the wierd taste in my mouth, he stopped, looked at me and went "You can't be pregnant. Your not allowed, remember?" So, for now, I'm going with pine nuts I just really hope it goes away soon!!

I have never had that happen except when the pine nuts were off.

This happened to some friends of mine! They said just that, it was Chinese pine nuts. They had to wait it out, ugh.

I don't like pine nuts, either. Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, even cashews-- yum! Walnuts are my fav Sounds like it's a new thing and maybe worth avoiding them if you don't care either way... hope it's over soon for you!
