I just looked up the price of rapadura sugar, which is recommended in the NT cookbook. I was blown away. The retail is over $80! Even on vitacost it's still $50. I guess I'll have to stick with my FL Crystals. I refuse to give up my tea, and I don't like it with honey.

The vitacost price at least is for 12 packages that are 24 oz. each. It's not so bad when you break it down.

Thank you for clarifying. I totally didn't see that! I thought it was for one package!

I get it in bulk at the HFS and pay about $3/lb, IIRC.

If you happen to be in Azure Standard's delivery/co-op area, they have a decent price on 33 lb. bags ($55?).

If tea is the only thing you're looking to use it with, I should mention this: I really don't like rapadura in tea. I love it in all sorts of baked goods, oatmeal, etc. But not in coffee or tea. The molasses flavor is too strong, and dominates the flavor of the tea. I would stick to the Florida Crystals for tea.

Thank you for mentioning that, but I'm not sure if that would apply to me. I brew my tea very strongly, and I like molasses flavor. Just in case, though, I prefer to just buy one box at first, but neither of my local health food stores sell it. I can check at Whole Foods.

Sucanat is also recommended in NT (if I am remembering correctly)
You might check prices on that.

sucanat is the generic name. for a while NT didn't recommend it, but they changed the processing back to the original method and it is now recommended. I buy generic sucanat through a local natural foods co-op and like it (though not for my tea, I'm your opposite.) I pay $1.59/lb.

Sucanat is a registered trademark. It is a brand of unrefined cane sugar just like Rapadura is. If you are buying in bulk at your co-op, you are proably buying the Wholesome Sweeteners Sucanat; it is available in large bags from the distributor. For $1.59 a pound it may not be the organic variety, but the "natural sucanat" only sold in bulk (see the third link below). The pricing I can see from UNFI for buying clubs is $1.91/lb for a 50 lb. bag of organic Sucanat and $1.37/lb for a 50 lb. bag of natural Sucanat.

Thank you for letting me know about Sucanat (I didn't know it was the same thing). I know I can find that.

well good grief. I bought "unrefined cane sugar" once and it was more like demara sugar than sucanat. I do buy the "natural" version instead of the organic. I save my organic money for certain thing in our diet that I use a lot more frequently than sugar.
