Allergic reaction and fever after dentist visit?

Today my dd had one small cavity filled and her 4 molars sealed. Immediately afterward she had an itchy throat and cough, which she gets from certain foods (mostly fruit). I gave her Benadryl right away (we carry it along with epipen for peanut allergy).

She also complained of an upset stomach, and also developed a fever of 101. Four hours later she needed another dose of Benadryl for the itchy throat.

I called the dentist and he has never had a reaction in a patient to either a filling or sealant - allergic nor fever. They do use latex gloves though. She hasn't been tested for latex allergy but she has food allergies and environmental allergies.

What could be going on with her? I'm leaning towards an unknown latex allergy, but why fever?

Thanks for any thoughts or experiences you have with this!

Is she allergic to banana, as that is related to latex? My DS (who is not the one with IgE allergies) once got hives following a dental appt. I since avoid latex with him. I would ask the dentist for a list of ingredient used with your DD. It could also have been the flavoring used (did they clean her teeth?) or dyes.

I have read several reports of kids having allergic reactions to dental sealants.

My ds' dentist recommended sealants for his molars at his last appointment in January. My concern about sealants at the time was that most brands contain BPA so I started researching. I don't have any links left on my computer, but I googled "bpa free dental sealants" or something similar and came up with lots of information. I came across several instances of kids having reactions to the sealants (and no sealants that are truely BPA free).

If you can find out the brand that your dentist used, you can find a list of ingredients on the net.

My ds also has an anaphalytic peanut allergy and has battled other allergies since he was a baby. In light of what I discovered about sealants, we've decided against them.

Thank you both! DD is just fine this morning, woke up fever-free, not coughing a bit and went to school like normal.

I talked with the dentist and got the name of the sealant used, looked it up and found out it is BPA free, but I've never heard of any of the ingredients. She didn't have her teeth cleaned - just the sealant.

I have an appt. with our allergist in 2 weeks to test for a latex allergy. I'm really hoping it's negative - they are doing a skin test, I don't know if it's reliable as RAST?

She has tested positive for plum and cantaloupe, reacts to some apples, but bananas have always been fine.

It's such a worry to think that it could be latex allergy - everything I've read seems like its a real pain to deal with, but we'll deal with it if we have to.

Thanks for your advice!

The dentist here always asks me about allergies before working on the kids because something they use sometimes I forget what can cause a reaction if they are allergic to peanuts like my dd it. I asked him once what it was but I cannot remember but it had to do with fillings.

Did you talk to the dentist about your peanut allergy before any work was done? Every single time I have taken dd in he has said "she has a peanut allergy right?"

Here's the list of ingredients in the sealant used, in case something jumps out at someone that might cause an allergic reaction:

For some reason I didn't research the decision to seal her molars. I with I had!

Bisphenol A Diglycidyl Bis-GMA (Matrix resin monomer)
methacrylate
Triethylene glycol TEGDMA (Matrix resin monomer)
dimethacrylate
Ethyl 4- EDMAB (Component of the photo-initiator system)
(dimethylamino)benzoate
Diphenyliodonium I+ (Component of the photo-initiator system)
hexafluorophosphate
DL-Camphorquinone CPQ (Component of the photo-initiator system)
Butylated hydroxytoulene (BHT Stabilizer, radical scavenger)
Dichorodimethylsilane (Silane treated Reinforced inorganic filler with a
reaction product amorphous silica particle size of .016 micrometers
with silica)
Tetrabutylammonium TBATFB (Fluoride releasing source)
tetrafluoroborate

Found this while googling fever & allergic reaction, very interesting...

"When inflammation or fever occurs as part of the immune response, it may be localized at an area of infection or be dispersed throughout the entire body. If the latter happens, the body temperature will increase and cause greater enzyme activity. This in turn, increases the metabolic rate; providing extra energy for the production of the leucocytes and immunoglobulins needed to fight the invading antigens. Although, in the case of an allergic reaction, this process is not successful, it may explain why allergy sufferers, particularly of food and chemical allergies, often tend to feel overheated."
