Nursing to sleep and gas

My six-month-old DS generally nurses to sleep at night. Usually I can burp him after he finishes on one side, but then he'll fall asleep while nursing on the second side. I lay him down and almost invariably he'll wake up crying 2-3 times in the next few hours because he needs to burp. Once we get a good burp out of him he'll sleep for a good stretch.

Those of you that nurse your babies to sleep - how do you burp them? I've tried keeping him awake so I could burp him, but then I have to get him to sleep all over again. I've also tried giving mylicon as soon as he unlatches, which sometimes works. Am I missing something?

We nurse to sleep, and during the night we nurse too, side-lying mostly. I've never gotten DS (who is also 6 months) to burp while sleeping. But you could try rolling him on his belly and rubbing or patting his back to help work out some of the gas before you lay him down in his crib or wherever he sleeps.

Generally if DS is asleep at the end of a nursing session, I don't burp him. But if he were to wake up like your DS does, I might be more inclined to try. DS seems to prefer to work his gas out the other end. He farts alot in his sleep

I nurse my daughter asleep as well and side laying at night so she doesn't get a lot of burp time. Rarely but sometimes she spits up laying on the side but mostly she lets it out the other end like the Mom before me was describing I used to feel bad about not burping her but I think she is ok with that. I burp her when she wakes up. Sometimes the bubbles in her tummy wake her up.

We nurse to sleep and our baby is 5 months. We also have had burp issues in the past. What we do now is, burp her on the first side and after nursing on the second side we swaddle her, then DH does this thing where he holds her facing out like she would be in a baby bjorn and then he gently leans her forward. Now I can't for the life of me get her to do it. But for him, it works every time.

I didn't burp any of my babies and they wouldn't wake in the night needing to burp but they were always really gassy out the bum in the mornings and I think it was from not burping them. lol
