Oh no, FLEAS! What to do?

We were given a kitten on friday, he's 6 weeks old. The kitten has fleas. It was bathed and combed before they brought it, but there are still some fleas on it. I can't get rid of it, it would break my dd's heart, since her kitten died last month on her birthday- run over right in front of her- and we've been trying to get her a new one ever since. Anyhow, we have lots of other animals but I have kept them pretty separate. I've never dealt with fleas before. We have 2 outdoor cats and a golden retriever, plus the chickens, ducks, turkeys and rabbits. The dog has sniffed the kitten a couple times but that's about it. I am not spending $ on vet bills, basically in the 2 yrs we've been here we've had 5 kittens dropped off (abandoned really) at our farmhouse and while I have given them shelter in the barn, fed them and treated them lovingly, I cannot afford medical care for strays- thankfully they've all been boys so far and 3 have moved on after a while.

If the kitten has a few fleas, is there a big worry that he could infest the house? He was running around inside for a little bit- we have no carpet at all and he was not allowed in the furniture or in the bedrooms/laundry room. The kids have been carrying him around though, could they get fleas on them and carry them in the house? What do I do about the cat? What can I wash him with? I really don't have spare $$ to spend on this right now, I need something cheap! I am keeping him in a private cage for now until I can get this treated. Please tell me I don't need to deflea my house and all my pets!??

Joy lemon soap will kill fleas and lice....scarry for your dinner plates, but good for you. Just wash him with it, leave it on about 5 minutes and rinse and dry. I would do it every day or 2 for a while, just to make sure you are catching anything that hatches after the inital wash...otherwise you will reinfest again. Also, unless you are really opposed, a flea coller might be a good idea.

Lastly, think about giving the whole animal family a Joy wash just for fun....and maybe some sprinkled borax (not sure if it works for fleas, but i'd guess so) where kitty was living.
