We were given a kitten on friday, he's 6 weeks old. The kitten has fleas.
It was bathed and combed before they brought it, but there are still some fleas on it. I can't get rid of it, it would break my dd's heart, since her kitten died last month on her birthday- run over right in front of her- and we've been trying to get her a new one ever since. Anyhow, we have lots of other animals but I have kept them pretty separate. I've never dealt with fleas before. We have 2 outdoor cats and a golden retriever, plus the chickens, ducks, turkeys and rabbits. The dog has sniffed the kitten a couple times but that's about it. I am not spending $ on vet bills, basically in the 2 yrs we've been here we've had 5 kittens dropped off (abandoned really) at our farmhouse and while I have given them shelter in the barn, fed them and treated them lovingly, I cannot afford medical care for strays- thankfully they've all been boys so far and 3 have moved on after a while.
If the kitten has a few fleas, is there a big worry that he could infest the house? He was running around inside for a little bit- we have no carpet at all and he was not allowed in the furniture or in the bedrooms/laundry room. The kids have been carrying him around though, could they get fleas on them and carry them in the house? What do I do about the cat? What can I wash him with? I really don't have spare $$ to spend on this right now, I need something cheap! I am keeping him in a private cage for now until I can get this treated. Please tell me I don't need to deflea my house and all my pets!??
