Hi!

I need to buy some seeds online and we want them organic. Where is a good place to buy them? Also, can you buy seedlings?

thanks!

Under resources at the top of the DITE forum is a list of seed companies that aren't connected with Monsanto. I mostly use www.groworganic.com and www.rareseeds.com. Baker Creek isn't certified organic, but sell seed grown organically. HTH Let us know what you order and come on over to the Food Growing Mamas thread.

I'll just add that Seed Savers is one of the few I've seen that will ship seedlings to you. I'm not sure what their shipping window is, but they have tomato, pepper, and tomatilla seedlings.

I really love fedco (www.fedcoseeds.com) for several reasons: They are a cooperative, they refuse to buy seed from Monsanto (and yes, plenty of varieties, even organically grown, are owned by Monsanto), they seem to shoot pretty straight in their descriptions, and they code each variety so that you know what type of grower produced the seed. Prices are very competative too!

One thing I would reccomend is to NOT buy from Heirloom Acres Seeds. They are terrible. The customer service stinks and they take forever to fill orders, if they fill your order at all. I had a heck of a time with them this spring, and it ruined my planting window for several things I wanted to put in.

Heirloom Acres Seeds can be hit or miss, depending on what you expect. Takes them a good 3 weeks to fill orders, and that's in Jan/Feb. If you call them up with a problem and get them on the line, they're actually pretty nice. I got ahold of Thom one year when my San Marzano tomatoes turned out to be Striped/Speckled Roman. He sent me a packet of SM's and a freebie packet.

But yeah, if you need quick shipping, Territorial, Irish Eyes, Baker Creek, Nichols are better bets (but can be a little more expensive).

As for seedlings, it may be a bit late in the season to get them, but I believe Seed Saver's Exchange or Seeds of Change might do plants. Your best bet may be to track down your local farmer's market and stalk the booths and talk to vendors if you can't find any plants there. Mine has had at least a dozen booths selling seedlings this year, easy. Two years ago, there were 3, sometimes 4 stands/people.

We get most of our seeds from Baker Creek, Seed Savers Exchange, and Johnny's Select Seeds.

I like southern exposure seed exchange. I like to get my seedlings from the local nurseries or farmer's market.

I like Fedco----Johnnys and Territorial seed

Saltspring Seeds. It's Canadian, so I think there are some shipping limitations... but it's all organic, all small-farmer-raised, lots and lots of heirlooms and rarities.

Well, I ordered from them in early March, and it took them over 8 weeks to fill my order, and they didn't fill it completely, but just sent most of the items after I did a PayPal dispute to get my money back. During that time I called multiple times and the phone just rings and rings (no answer, no machine.) I also e-mailed them about 5 times with no response, and tried to contact them through the paypal dispute center 3 times with no response. When their site says 2 weeks, 8+ is really unacceptable.

I love Fedco, it's always my first choice since the prices are so much better, especially if you order over 30 worth.

Johnny's is my second fave, the quality is superior but it's pricier too.
