Waldorf 16 in doll questions

Hi all,
I'm a fairly crappy sewer, although I'm great at knitting, crochet, and most other crafts. My mom, however, is very good and will be in town this weekend. I'm hoping to have her help me make a Waldorf doll for my son's 2nd birthday. I have looked up patterns and am really not sure which is the best. Any suggestions? I'm hoping for free or very cheap, and simple, just in case my mama isn't "in the mood." Also, can I use womens' hose instead of tubular gauze? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Honestly- I think its worth buying a kit that comes with everything you need. I've gotten them in the past from www.dancingraindolls.com and Joy's- both kits were great, and even someone who doesn't sew a lot can do it. If you want to have a great doll that will last a long time, cutting corners now may mean the doll won't hold up as well later. That said, the Silver Penny (google it) has a free pattern and directions to make one with stuff from the dollar store.
