Anti-circ people are everywhere!

In my online sociology class this week we had to name three things about our own culture that we find odd and post about them to our class discussion board- SEVERAL people (including myself, of course) chose circ as an oddity and were quite vocal and blunt about their reasoning!

Only one person stuck up for circ and her "facts" were erroneous- and quickly proven to be so with links to credible sources!

So, anti-circ people ARE out there, even if we don't know we're seeing them everywhere we go- I thought I would be the only one criticizing circumcision and it was actually quite a popular sentiment among my classmates. This is an online class for a community college, so it's a very diverse class with a relatively wide range of ages, cultural backgrounds, and income levels, and so many people were equally opposed to circ and FGM!

I remember the same thing happening with breastfeeding in my sociology class 15 years ago. It's nice to see progress, albeit slow.

I've always believed there were more if us than we think. And every now and again there is an incident that occurs, like this one, which strongly hints that this is the case. It make me happy to read things like this.

Awesome! I also hear a lot of agreement when/if I voice my anti-circ opinions. I'm actually surprised that I've never met resistance, usually my friends/family voice their regret over circs

Sweet with a hint of bitter. I'm sad for any parent who did circ & may end up having a change of mind & then feels bad for doing so - and for their sons, obviously. And its awesome that there will come a day (i'm sure of this!) when RIC is a thing of the past.

It's so encouraging to hear stories like this when sometimes IRL I feel surrounded by people who have never given circumcision a second thought and think I'm crazy because I have. THank you for sharing!

I think anti-circers often don't talk about it because it's a "sensitive" subject, about genitals and all that.

That's sort of been my experience. And OT, but you have the coolest due date ever, lol.

This is encouraging. The last time I visited this board, I felt discouraged because I think the recent circ stats are so discouraging.

But, I think I have noticed something in my life. All my American friends and coworkers have circed their sons except one. It blows my mind! But what's different about these parents from parents from the 60s or 70s is that they know their is a debate. They know that circ is being questioned. They respect me and my son who they know is intact. Although circ is the norm here and in my peer group, they accept that leaving a boy intact is not a "crazy" choice.

In some ways, it pisses me off because these parents were half way there to making the right decision and yet they succumbed to cultural inertia. On the other hand, it is a good sign. I am trying really hard to look on the bright side because I am feeling a little depressed about this issue.
