My 7.5 mth old son developed a bright red rash around his mouth around 5pm yesterday. He was chewing on a new wood toy and is cutting 3 teeth at once so I didn't think much of it. He stopped plating with the toy and by bedtime I was starting to get a little concerned--it looked different than his drool rash.
I remembered that I had had a smoothie at 1230 that afternoon.
frozen banana
soymilk
a little trader joes almond butter with flax seeds
a tiny corner of a chocolate cliff bar
He is not into purees at all (just began offering solids of any kind a couple of weeks ago) and I've been kind of dabbling with Baby Led Weaning...so when he reaches for my food I usually let him play. Not thinking, I let him hold my cup which meant his fingertips touched the smoothie and he put his mouth along the rim for like 20-30 secs. My husband and I have no food allergies and almonds have always been a huge part of my vegetarian diet.
So we tried to figure out what called his rash and began to really read about nut allergies and now we are both terrified. We paged the ped past night and he told us that as long as he was breathing ok (he was fine) then just watch the rash. He thought it would be gone by the morning.
Doc was wrong. The rash is still here. Less bright but it's there. One of his new teeth finally broke through in the night as well.
So, the internet has me totally overwhelmed and terrified. I have read that I need to get some allergy test to confirm but also that in infants the tests don't work. I have read that now that he has been in contact with nuts if he gets them again he could go into shock. I have no experience with any allergies and am feeling like a horrible mother for exposing him to a "no no" allergy food....thinking I'm going to take him in to the doc this afternoon but really need insight from you mamas!
Thank you!

It could have been anything in your smoothie, not just the almonds. People can be hypersensative or allergic to anything. Or it could have been related to the NEW wooden toy that he was chewing on when it occurred. Not all allergies are anaphlactic, and the fact that it seems to have occurred several hours later from when you had your smoothie you know that it's atleast not an immediate severe life threatening reaction from something in it. That said, it can get worse with repeated exposure if it was a true allergy, but doesn't always happen. Allergy testing isn't a complete waste at that age, it's just not as accurate before age 2. If your child didn't have any swelling or hives other places on her body, etc. I wouldn't panic just yet.
