fruit salad

Are there any fruits that don't go well together in a fruit salad? There is so much fruit on sale this week and I want to make a huge one for our Memorial Day party. I typically eat my fruit one kind at a time though so I'm worried I'm going to put too much fruit in or a weird combo together.

Good question! I think it's just a matter of preference. I'd buy whatever is on sale or sounds good and chop it up. The fruit salad I made tonight had tons of strawberries (b/c I got 5 lbs for $5), bananas, apples, and grapes (and yogurt and granola - it's how my kids like it). Oranges would have been good, I think, but I didn't grab any today.

Maybe look up fruit salad recipes and read the ratings some sites include? Usually if something has 4-5 stars, my family also enjoys it.

I really can't think of any unless you're getting into the exotics. I tend to avoid anything that browns/softens really quickly (bananas, ripe peaches, soft pears, etc.) or anything too watery (watermelon), but that's just my preference. For a summery salad I'd go with apricots, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, a nice ripe melon, maybe some other random stone fruit and/or tropicals (mango, pineapple). I'd skip the winter fruit (apple, banana, pear, citrus), just because most people are sick of it by now.

I leave out bananas. Grapefruit I serve separately since some people can't eat it due to medication interactions.

You could also do several bowls of individual fruits, like one bowl of cantaloupe cut up into cubes, one bowl of strawberries cored, one bowl of watermelon cut up into cubes, one bowl of grapes, etc. I did that for our baby's recent baptism, and it was a big hit.

I *personally* don't like fruit mixed up all together. And since you mention that you eat it separately, I thought I'd suggest it.

(And yes, I realize that I totally did not answer your question at all! This post was probably no help at all, and totally useless!

Like the pp's, I don't always add in stuff like banana, unless I know it will all get eaten.

My fave combos are usually something crisp (apple or pear), something soft (peach, apricot, mango), berries or grapes, and something juicy (pineapple, citrus). I also like to toss in dried fruit sometimes, like dried figs or golden raisins and squeeze extra lemon or lime juice on top. Doing 3-4 different fruits is plenty, especially for a large fruit salad.
