5 month old with Labial Adhesion

My DD had her 4 month old well baby check yesterday (she will be 5 months on June 7) and Dr said she has a labial adhesion - about a quarter of her labia is closed. She told me to put KY jelly on the area with every diaper change, and that when DD hits puberty things will open up.

I, of course, google this when I get home and read all sorts of different things. Many people say to just leave it alone. A good friend told me that she wouldn't mess with the KY because the jelly will bring in more bacteria (since I have to open the outer folds to get the jelly on the adhesion).

Any advice out there? Dr said some people put hormones on the area to open it up, but she is not comfortable doing that (and neither am I)

Should I use the KY jelly, or just let it be? I hate to mess around with it if it will cause more irritation for her!

My neice had a labial adhesion and my sister was given a hormone cream to put on it, but she opted to wait and see. She never used anything, and just kept an eye on it. Eventually it went away on its own. Personally I wouldn't put KY down there for the reasons you mentioned, and just keep an eye on it.

Unless it gets so bad that it is affecting her urination I wouldnt bother it. They do resolve on their own the majority of the time. There is no way I would use hormone cream on a baby since they are not meant to have hormones in that quantity yet.

My daughter had that problem as well and I was also very concerned. I kept an eye on it and thankfully it took care of its self.

If you do a search there are many post/information about other options.

My daughter was given the same diagnosis at 3 months, and I was told absolutely NOT to put things on it, especially not hormones! EEk!

It cleared up just fine and is not a problem at all unless it affects urination. As long as she's peeing, she should be just fine.

I would not put anything on it at all.

My dd had this as well as a babe. Once her estrogen kicked in it has started releasing on its own. I would leave it alone unless it impacted her ability to urinate.

I haven't read through the other replies yet, but here's my 2cents worth.
My daughter had them when she was born and I did all sorts of searching trying to figure out the best thing to do. In the end I decided to leave it alone and see how it did on it's own. The alternatives seemed too traumatic especially at such a young age, although I don't think any age is any better for this kind of thing. The Drs siad around 3 yo they start producing thier own hormones and it often opens up at that time.
I checked frequently, as sometimes it closed enough to make her urnine stream like a spray! In the end, it opened up all on it's own and there are no problems. She is now 3 1/2.
