Ok I'm so addicted to makeing both soakers and longies right now. I don't even have any in diapers right now,I have to make them for other people to justify it!
2 links for ya http://www.borntolove.com/frugal-column2.html
frugal baby tips section.
I have made these and have since made soakers a different way that I like better. short and sweet:
Take your sweater bottom band facing you. The waist band on the sweater will be the waist of your soaker. cut as wide as you need for 1/2 your babies waist I allow enough room for some stretch as I use elastic in the waist band. Cut a rectangle the length you need for 1/2 your babies rise.

-------------- waist

l l e

bottom

Sew the two length sides and the bottom shut.Right sides together.
On the two bottom corners cut a leg hole in the shape of a quarter of a circle,
Make sense?
I then turn over the top waist band sew a casing for elastic and thread elastic.Sew shut.
Now I make the leg bands. You can do this a few ways. You can use the rest of the waist band cut to length and sew end to end, insert in the leg hole and sew right sides together.
Or you can make your own out of a piece of the sweater. This means you cut two rectangles the length of your leg opening and double the width you want your leg band to be. Sew the short ends of each piece together (not both pieces to each other, there is one piece for each leg.
Then fold the piece so that the long ends are together right sides out.. Now you have one raw side and one folded side Insert into leg opening and sew right sides together.
You got your self a butt sweater. If these directions suck ask me some questions!
Wool longies: I used the www.babyluv.net pattern.Just like they say.
I can get one set of wool longies and 2 butt sweaters out of one sweater. Or 2 wool longies and 1 sweater.
The fun is in the hunt for the sweaters and cutting them up!!!

thanks soo much! i can't wait to start making nice cuddly butt sweaters for my gal- my wool soakers are all too small and i thought, hey, i should make my own. shouldn't be too hard... i made dd cute leggings from the arms of a felted sweater and a little cardigan from the body- i made the cardigan a bit too tight around the tummy, tho. forgot to factor in her big belly!
i have a huge pile of woolen sweaters that i collect from my friends & the clothing by the pound bins at thrift stores. i'll post if i have any questions- thanks again boycrazy!

i just looked at the pattern on baby-luv- it looks like the same thing i made for my dd a while back but she uses them as pants-
i wonder if the leggings should be snug where the legs meet the bottom to ensure waterproofness? i guess i will experiment with her leggings and see how i like it with her fitted diapers.

i would think wool soakers/leggings are great in all kinds of weather.... unless you're gonna be out in the heat all day long. wool is really breathable and has so much benefits- wool is really stretchy also, my wool soakers fit my girl for a real long time!

My dd loves running around in her wool longies...They are so comfy...I have even used them successfully with a snappi'd prefold...Like a pp said, the fun is hunting for cool sweaters to cut up.

i made dd a great pair of wool longies yesterday and she's been wearing them ever since- they are just awesome!! don't know why i didn't make my own earlier, it only took me a morning to do it, and i'm no sewing expert. i changed the pattern a bit tho, to make it longer.. i cut off part of the body of the sweater, above the arms, so i'd have more room to work with. it turned out real well after a bit of tweaking. i cut off the turtleneck piece and it made a real cute cap to match her leggings..

The other thing I do if I felted the sweater before hand and the sleeves are too short is to look on my floor for scraps of wool from other projects to make a panel twice as wide and as long as I need extra and sew it in at about knee level. Brittani has 2 pair that are like this that look pretty neat that way.

mommy2brittani-
that is a great idea about using scraps of different colors- that would look cool. one thing i was wondering about felted sweaters for soakers & longies- would they be flexible enough to stretch? some sweaters felt too much and the waistbands aren't really stretchy anymore.... do you always felt the sweaters for soakers & longies?
btw- i LOVE your site! just checked it out today- beautiful diapers~ you're a real artisan!

I used to, but not anymore...I sort of judge by the sweater...the one in the picture on my site I didn't felt and it works fine. And I generally add elastic to the waistband of longies, or I crochet a chain drawstring for butt sweaters, cuz dd was never on the bigger end of things, so nothing really stayed up well enough

I don't ever felt my sweaters before making soakers. They work just fine
