CLE Math in CA

I was wondering if CLE Math meets CA State Standards? I want to switch from what we're using now to CLE Math 3 but I need Math that is state standards alligned. It may not be important to others but it is to me. Please be gentle with your advice.

Do you like their teacher's manual? Is it pretty easy to understand and teach?

Thank you.

Hi,

We use CLE math & absolutely love it! We switched mid year from Rod & Staff Grade 2 over to CLE Grade 2. We started from the beginning because CLE was much more advanced. I'm hoping to be almost done with it by Fall so we can start Grade 3. I'm not sure of CA standards, but CLE is advanced compared to many programs. You could call CLE though & ask. Also, there is a CLE yahoo loop that's fairly active & you could join there and ask as well (there's a CLE representative online that is very helpful). As for the TM, I've never used it honestly. I own it, but the student book is sufficient in explaining things. I bought the TM for grade 3 too, but I'm not sure that I'll need that either.

Anyway, I know I didn't answer your question necessarily, but imho, I can't imagine CLE falling below any state standard. If you have specific questions, I own Gr. 3 already... feel free to ask.

HTH.

Hi Elizawill, thank you for your reply. I just joined their yahoo group and have posted my question. I hope someone replies soon. Do you need the flashcards? Are the flashcards one-sided or double sided? what FC do you need for 3rd grade? Do you also use other CLE products?

Thank you again!

The CA state standards are pretty close to the standards in "What Your #grader Needs to know". You can look at the table of contents in the math section of that book and compare it to your math book. Or you can look at the table of contents in a state approved math book.

Thank you. I have the CA State Standards Math printed out and the Scope and Sequence but can't tell what is what (to align them). It will be easier to get an answer than trying to compare because the terms are different. Thank you.

Do you need one that matches the state standards just because that's what you want? Or is it because you're enrolled with a charter school and they need to approve it? If it's the latter, if you speak to whomever approves the curriculum, they might be able to compare the S&S to the State Standards for you, or they might have encountered this curriculum before and already know. I know the charter we're with has a list of all the common math curriculums and what levels align with what CA Standard grade, or will sometimes say "Add xyz concept to align with grade level 3" for things that are close but don't hit everything.

I belong to a charter but they do not make suggestions as to what to add to align it with state standards. I also do not think that they will have CLE in their list because it is a Christian curriculum.

I would prefer a math program where I do not have to supplement that's why I am hoping that CLE is complete and meets standards.

Thank you for your patience in answering my questions.

for 3rd grade, i did purchase the flashcards. there are a ton of them with multiplication on the front and related division on the back (i.e. 8X2= on the front and 16/2= on the back). you *could* make your own, but that would make my hand cramp, lol. i bought the multiplication & division flashcards listed in the grade 3 math (for $9). no, i don't use anything else by CLE currently. i had purchased the grade 3 LA, but i actually just sold it this week. originally i was drawn to their LA because it's all-inclusive. but i've since decided to stick with HWT for cursive, which means i won't need the CLE penmanship. my daughter needs extra help with spelling - so we've been using AAS (which we LOVE!), so i won't need CLE spelling. and finally i've read that CLE LA needs additional writing...so we'll be using WWE. it just doesn't make sense to use CLE for grammar only. i've decided to use daily grams for grammar & i also own grade 3 spectrum LA. my daughter is very good with grammar, so i'm not worried about that aspect of things. anyway - the CLE LA is supposed to be very good though! it just isn't a good fit for my daughter's situation.

hope this helps!

ETA - since you have the CA scope & sequence, why not compare it to the S&S of CLE math? here's a link http://www.clp.org/documents/3201/or..._2009-2010.pdf

3rd grade math is on page 35. maybe that will help you too. fwiw, the first LU is always a review of the previous year's work.

I agree that the California standards are somewhat difficult to make heads or tails of! It's not a straightforward list, and I feel that there's a lot of room for (mis?)interpretation by parents which might be more clear to those who have had some training in the standards.

The thing about California State Standards is that they include things at an early grade level, such as statistics, which might well be left out of a perfectly rigorous math curriculum.

Personally (and as a California resident) I think that if the curriculum seems right for you and the basic arithmetic meets or exceeds California standards, it's worth getting. If the standards matter to your family, you can find a way to supplement those parts without too much difficulty. (Reading on further, I see that you don't want to supplement with something different, so feel free to ignore that!)

We're on our third year of using CLE and I have not had to supplement. It covers everything we would need it to, at least at this point.
