Ineed any info you guys could give.

I am 33, mother of 3, and wife and work fulltime.
That being said I'm tired of my deadend jobs I've done over the years to keep health insurance for my family. Iwant to go back to college. It has to be all online I want an Accounting degree. If you have any college recommendations I would appreciate it I live inIndana. The only school I've looked at so far is Ivy Tech they have really good tuition but I dont know if they are any good or not.

I need help getting the most I can ongrants I am not willing to take out loans the last time I went for 1 year and it took 8 years to pay back. Here's our financials DH makes 55000 a year and I make 18900. This is all before taxes I dont know if that matters. Any ideas or suggestions I need them all. I have no clue if I could get grants and would love to hear you guys takes on it

Thanks

Hi Tina,

Good for you for going to school with all that on your plate!

I can't vouch for any particular school, but I can tell you this: be on the lookout for grants specifically for re-entry students (usually defined as 25 and up for undergrad and 29 and up for grad students), grants for women, and grants for parents. Unfortunately, women are not a minority in accounting (this page says they're about equal), so you don't qualify for a woman as a minority. Are you a racial minority? That's another lucrative avenue to pursue.

A quick Google search comes up with these:

The Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting and scholarships
OEDB accounting scholarships
Grant opportunities for women

Good luck, and welcome to academia!

The only grants that I know of that are specifically for education, and are not from a specific college or university, are the Pell Grant and SEOG Grant. They're income dependent and I'm fairly certain that you wouldn't qualify for them.

The best thing to do would be to fill out a FAFSA and then have that information sent to the financial aid department of the school you would be attending. You can then talk to the FA people and see what FA you are eligible for.

I know that taking out loans sucks, but if you take out loans and finish school, you'll be making enough money to pay them back. I finally had to accept the fact that I would not be able to complete school without taking out loans.

I know that this isn't about grants, but watch out for those for profit schools, which are very appealing to students who want to get a degree online. Frontline just did a show about them, and I would never trust any of those places. If your interested I know you can watch the episode on their website, Frontline.com.

As far as grants go, those are usually need based, and from the institution you are going to, the state you live in, or the federal government. Grants are usually awarded to you based on your FAFSA, and can also be dependent on how early in the year you file your FAFSA. Your schools financial aid office determines what grants you are eligible for. Most free money that isn't need based is scholarships.
