So You Think You Can Dance Season 7 starts this week! - Page 3

I'm so sad that Anthony Burrell didn't make it in. I know they can't only take contemporary dancers but he was SO much better than the B-boy. I'm happy with the girls, though. I'm not sure the tapper should have made it but I'm looking forward to this season.

So...I'm watching the first real episode on the mainstage and I'm really bored.

I was glad they at least gave us a bit more of a chance to get to know the dancers, though the format was odd with all the group dances. Hopefully next week we will see each dancer with only one partner, if not it will be too hard to concentrate on who is new and who isn't.

Um, and that hip-hop dance? Not their best. Not at all.

i'm kinda bored i miss the couples

Ok, maybe I'm the only one, but I am enjoying it They did that mixed-up group routines thing last year, too. It's just a different way to showcase their dance styles, before we head into the couple routines every week.

I'm sorry Anthony Burrell didn't make it, either. He seemed like a strong contender. Maybe there is more to it than they showed.

And I think theyre really stretching this Billy Bell thing. It's like they WANT him to be on the show so badly, they are willing to bend the rules to make sure he gets on!

It's bad enough they are only having 10, but then last night they teased us by saying that the top 24 each got to do a solo one more time but we only got to watch ONE dancer! After that it was an hour and a half of the judges on road trip. I read a book and looked up occasionally to see who was laughing and who was crying. SO not worth it. Also, BOO to the judges for making those dancers go home and wait for weeks to be told in front of their families that they hadn't made it in. Just tell them in Vegas and get it over with so they can decompress. I could care less that Nigel (supposedly) got lost in Ohio or that Tyce drank margaritas in Miami - I just want to watch great dancers do their thing.

Seriously unimpressed with the lack of dancing and the stupid filler stunts from the judges.
I agree. The one change I like is that some one seems to have told Mary Murphy to shut up. Last season I had to stop watching or at least mute it when the judges talked because she was shrieking so much. I didn't mind her in the first few seasons, but she got progressively louder and more shrill and over the top each of the last few seasons.

I'm ok with the idea of having the more experienced dancers. I'm willing to give it a chance, but I had too hard of a time keeping track of who was who and who was new in all the group dances.

Totally hear you on the Mary Murphy thing. You know, the sad part is I actually like her and think she gives valuable criticism when she is calm, but I usually watch her on mute until the shrieking stops. So over the top and unnecessary.

Okay, is it just me or is the audience obnoxiously loud this season while people are dancing? They ruined Alex and Allison for me especially the girl that kept yelling "ALEEEEEX!!!" It was so distracting and completely inappropriate. Did they mic the crowd and encourage them to cheer so it would sound more exciting and lively or something? Or maybe the audio folks fell asleep or are new the program or something? It sounded like some MTV awards show. My husband noticed it too but maybe we're just getting to be old curmudgeons .

And on a side note, isn't it freaky how much Kent looks like Adam?

so idk if i like the allstars i feel like they're helping the dancers scrape by... and its hard to have chemistry everytime like that.. so far this week i liked jose an billie the most... also kent the girls didn't really do it for me but it was nice seeing Katherine again

I'm watching the results show and then my DH is switching to the NBA finals during commercial breaks. Usher is sitting courtside at the game...and performing "live" on SYTYCD.... Hmmmmm... I don't think the results show is as live as it may seem. Or maybe just the guest performances are taped ahead of time or something.

Subbing to keep up...wasn't thrilled with who went home tonight, but I don't have any strong fave yet anyhow. I first started watching in season 4, and there hasn't been anyone to compare to Twitch/Joshua/Katee/Courtney/other Courtney/Mark since then IMO.

I think last night's judgment about who to send home was based solely on the fact that they didn't want to kick out the only female ballroom/Latin dancer they have. Alexis definitely didn't deserve to go home.

I go back and forth between enjoying watching past seasons' dancers and feeling like it is a distraction from THIS season's talent. They don't really get much chance to form a connection with partners this time, and I wonder how vested the all-stars are in pouring it all out on the stage since they're not competing. As a performer you always want to give it everything you've got, of course, but there's just a mental difference when you know for certain you'll be performing on that stage again vs. when you have to fight for it.

It just kind of seems like SYTYCD is......trying too hard......for lack of a better phrase. Last year they added a Fall season which was harder to get into since we had JUST finished the previous season and it competed too much with other shows. This year they're shaking up the whole format, and not necessarily for the better. Really, the appeal of this show is being introduced to new up-and-coming dancers and enjoying their incredible talent. I wish they would just let us watch the competition and not get so worked up with a bunch of unnecessary schtick.

I completely agree, there is so much nonsense thrown in anymore.

I agree! I don't like the format this time. I would like it better if they stayed with the same allstar dancer for a long while, like usual.

I really thought Melinda should have gone home last night. I don't get the Melinda-love. She's not all that.

I really liked a few dances last night: Alex and Allison!!! I totally agreed with the judges! Amazing! And I liked the hip hop routine and the African jazz routine a lot.

The crowd is driving me crazy!!! I never noticed them before, but this season they're sooo loud. It's like they're having screaming competitions while the show goes on. I also HATE how they constantly change camera angles (this bothered me last season too) I feel like I'm missing things. Sometimes the dancers are even a little out of the camera frame. The dances are made to be preformed infront of an audience, you don't have to constantly change camera angles, just keep it straight forward!!!!

I thought the ballroom girl should have gone home. Their's no ways she can do half of the things Alexis can do. I thought she look stiff and akward in her performance. Melinda doesn't impress me, but I still like her better than the other girl.

I'm still very disappointed with this season. I was hoping the new set up would grow on me, but I feel like I'm growing more and more annoyed with it each show.

I agree with what's been said. I didn't think Alexis deserved to go home. They didn't want to lose their only tapper and only ballroom girl. So sad! After all those seasons of trying to get on the show and then to get cut first.

The camera close ups are driving me nuts. I want to see the whole body when I am watching a dance show!

I miss the old format so much.
I'm actually really enjoying the new format. I feel like they get to do better things than they get to do when they are both contestants, plus I can pay more attention to the one contestant.

The camera angle thing has always bothered me. Either they are way too far back and it's dark, or they are showing weird angles and you can see their whole bodies.

I feel sorry that Alexie went home, but I don't think it was a bad choice. I don't think that Cristina deserved to go yet, but yeah, I guess maybe Alexie had more potential than either Cristina or Melinda. I agree they didn't want to again kick the tap/ballroom dancers off right away, but it's also possible they thought Alexie would shine right from the beginning, and they aren't seeing it. The thing is, I don't think it was necessarily her fault. I really feel like the music that accompanies a piece is important, and for a hip hop piece that was kind of boring, and the song didn't really help.

Alex was good, I loved his lines, but raving about him as much as they did was annoying. They've said the same things about other pieces, especially ones by Sonya, so it just feels like the judges are fickle or forgetful when they try to say that THIS is the new best. There have been better routines in the history of the show, as far as I'm concerned.

The contemporary routines, when they have an emotional backstory and are paired with and iconic song, always do well. I loved Alex's ballet lines, but I don't think it's something that only he alone could have done.

I agree. The hyperbole has gotten so out of hand that it's become difficult to take any of the compliments to the dancers at face value.

I was surprised at who went home last night too. Fast forwarded through Usher. Not a fan. The guest dancers bugged me too. The guy was chewing gum and I found it so distracting that I couldn't focus on the dancing.

I'm a big DWTS fan, but this is my first SYTYCD season thanks to the realityfan link a pp provided earlier (thank you! they also show Strictly Come Dancing, I can't believe it!) Being a newbie, the format doesn't really bother me. I think Alex's dance was great but the hullaballoo over it was overdone, they do it on DWTS too, as though the judges have a vivid and clearcut catalog of *every*single*dance* in their heads, to be able to determine that ONE as theeeee best, I don't buy it.

I couldn't stand Alexie's sneakers and skinnyjeans on her performance, I think that made me feel not so bad that she went home.

I do have a noob question, I know that some of the DWTS pros were on SYTYCD, how many ballroom dancers do they typically have per season? I know there's only Cristina this time, and she says she's mostly Salsa, is SYTYCD annoyed about being a "farm" for DWTS, maybe why they only have one? I was just wondering, I don't know what the relationship is between the two shows, if they're amicable or really competitive?

Ok, finally getting a chance to post my thoughts!!!

I totally agree about the crowd, during serious dances it's so annoying to hear "ALEX!!!"

And the camera work has been so strange- in the opening sequence this week the dancers were nearly out of the frame! And so often they're just showing their upper bodies and not their legs dancing! Or are so far away you can't see what's going on!

I greatly disliked how the "all star" walks off the stage and doesn't participate in the judging. I found it very disjointed. It's like they go through all this work together, do this emotional routine, and the partner says "bye bye"! you're on your own! I saw an interview with Nigel and thankfully he says he didn't like that either and they will be standing as a couple from now on.

And I don't like how they'll be switching partners every week- I think part of the appeal of the show is growing to love the couples.

So does this mean the show will be half as long, since they are starting out with only 11? I agree, I love seeing old favorites, but hate that there are so few new dancers to get to know.

Kent is something else!!! Oh, the enthusiasm!!!!
