Newborn Covers?

are they totally necessary the first few days? How much do they wet at a time? i thought I read a few tablespoons? is that right?

I got about 10 covers from freecycle a long while ago, before we were even pg. upon close evaluation and after washing once, probably only about 5 are really in good enough shape to be reliable, and the other 5 are in various states from servicable in a desperate situation to downright unusable.

i bet some of my home made NB dipes would hold it all without a cover... they are really really thick. am i nuts?

could I see which of the 5 we have work and then order some more online and hope we get them within a week or so?

we have a couple litewraps, a cot'n wrap, and a niji wool. (that I have to learn how to wash and re-lanolize...)

shoudl we be good, or do I need more covers?I know NB poos can be explosive!

I like to have 2 newborn covers and about 4-5 size small covers. A wool or two cover in the mix is an even bigger bonus. The newborns give a great fit at first, but they only last for so long (so that's why I don't buy a lot). I can and do start using the size small covers right away too, they're just not as nice a fit as the newborn ones are when baby is still tiny and new.

My babies ranged from barely 6 pounds to almost 9 pounds and it's been about the same every time. If I were broke or just unmotivated, I would just buy a bunch of the size small covers and skip newborn all together.

If I had money to throw around I'd get 4-6 newborn covers and 4-5 small sized ones.

thanks for your quick reply! I think i'm making NB diapering more of a "thing" than I need to.

we already have 6 assorted small covers so I think we're set then. thank you!!!

I was just picturing that I'd have this little poop and pee factory, and nothing to keep it all contained in my new-mama haze.

Well they can be handy in the beginning. The fit is better/cuter. Some mom's say they couldn't do it with out the newborn covers at first, so ymmv.

I've just gotten very relaxed/comfortable (lazy?) with my cloth diapering over the years. It'll be interesting to see what other moms recommend to you about it.

Congrats on the new baby.

i guess it also depends on brand. i use motherease air flow. dd2 barely fit into the nb sizeat birth, lowest about 6lb 10 oz.
she just outgrew them at 13lb and 16w. she now wears sm the best but can easily fit in the med. she also can still wear a nb bimmis pull-on
dd carries her weight in her thighs

I think a big part of how much you NEED newborn covers is what diaper you are using under it and how often your baby poops. My younger son was usually coverless, he peed little bits quite often and pooped little bits quite often. My older son on the other hand... would hold it for an hour or more at a time as a newborn and PEEEEE and then not poo for a day and explode. Him, we needed a cover because no fitted or fold of prefolds would contain those poops...
