Allergic to Milk but not Yogurt???

DS has eaten yogurt without a problem since he was about 1 y.o. Milk, on the other hand, he's never taken to - he doesn't like the taste usually but on the rare occasion when he asks for milk, more often than not it will make him vomit or give him bad diarrhea. Is it possible for him to be allergic to Milk but not yogurt? I could see if all dairy affected him in a similar fashion, but yogurt has never given him problems; in fact, he can even eat yogurt cheese but hates regular cheese. Occasionally, he'll eat pizza with cow's cheese and be fine with it, but there have been times that cheese has given him diarrhea too so we just avoid it. He'll also eat whipped cream without repercussions (what's that about??).

We've made an effort to eliminate most obvious dairy foods from his diet (milk, hard & soft cheese, ice cream) just to avoid upsetting his tummy, but I can't figure out the yogurt! Before nixing the yogurt altogether, I figured I'd ask to see if anyone has any info that might make yogurt better than other dairy.

DS really likes yogurt, and I like the fact that he's getting all the healthy bugs along with the protein & calcium, so if I could keep it in his diet that would be great. I could care less about the cheese and milk! Some extra info, he drinks Rice milk and Soy milk for cereal, and is non-vax.

If anyone has any insight into DS' food intolerance, any info is welcome!
Thanks!

to me it sounds like he is lactose intolerant verses alergic to milk. the bacterial culture is what makes him able to eat the yoghurt. being alergic to milk it is the protein that is the allergie.

took years for me to learn all this my family has lactose intolerance but me i am allergic to milk anything with cows milk in it will make me sick. best way to say it is like i have a sinus cold and i feel half dead like i have been poisioned. I have just learned that i can not handle beef. now with lactose intolerance it is more the running of the belly, gas, bloating, upset stomach.

edited to add:

People who are moderately lactose-intolerant can consume yoghurt without ill effects, because much of the lactose in the milk precursor is converted to lactic acid by the bacterial culture

Thanks for the link! Very informative. It was cool learning about yoghurt (it's going to take me a while to get used to spelling it that way!)

It definitely made me more comfortable to give DS yoghurt. Another question, if DS is o.k. eating yoghurt, does that mean he should be o.k. eating frozen yogurt? I guess I'll just have to try and see, but not sure if the frozen yogurt is really yoghurt or just contains yoghurt.

the frozen yoghurt should be fine if you get one that has bacterial cultures in it. you can always be like us over here and buy italian icecream or sobert which is dairy free. as you know always read the lable they sneek milk in some
i want to buy a ice cream maker that way i can make soberts & goats milk/yoghurt ice cream since i am not alergic to it.
