Could this be a nursing strike?

Ds had a fever for the past two days (we think it is a reaction to the mmr vaccine we did 3 weeks ago). The first 24 hours he reacted the way he always has when under the weather & just wanted to be on me all the time & nursed a ton.

But then last night something changed. He kept turning his face away when I offered the breast. Sometimes he would ask for it but then refuse when I offered. Other times he would latch on loosely & then just lay there not moving & not nursing - just latched on. For the first time (ever?) he fell asleep for me last night without nursing (he'll do this with dh or my mom but never me).

This has continued all day today into this evening. I was able to get him to nurse in the middle of the night & early this morning when he was pretty much asleep but while awake he has refused. Even when he fell & hurt himself he wouldn't actually suck - just put his mouth on & lay still for a moment.

This evening he was just beside himself. His fever broke early this morning & nothing else appears to be wrong as far as I can tell. He was SOOOO tired but would not relax against me & nurse. He finally latched on loosely & fell asleep with my nipple in his mouth without actively sucking.

It's so distressing to see him so upset & not seem to be able to soothe him.

Any words of wisdom?
