I think this forum is going to be my new home for now.
LOL
(This may be part rant.
Or mostly rant. Sorry! Working in the garage tonight was PAAAAAAAINFUL!)
I would like to hear from anyone who has downsized from a place with a garage to a place without a garage. When we moved here (oversized single car garage) we had no garage stuff save a box or two of camping gear and our bikes. And yet somehow our car has never seen the inside of our garage.
It's like stuff just somehow exploded in there. For the 3 years that we've lived here, I've barely been able to go in there without feeling uncomfortable (I have a real problem with clutter, it eats at my soul
). It's totally my DH's domain. He collected tools and stuff like MAD.
So now we're moving to a place without a garage of our own. We may have a small area we can put a storage box in front of our parking space in the shared garage. Other than that the only place for that type of thing will be in my DH's pickup or in the closets in our apartment (one coat closet, one walk-in, one regular). So we could easily find places for a tool box to fix the random thing that breaks and ok ok, I said DH could bring his power tools which all fit in a rather large zip-up bag. Those will come in handy.
But then he wants to bring like a whole floor to ceiling shelving unit full of other random tools and car fixing supplies and STUFF and if we don't have room to keep it out at his parents' house for who knows how many years and take it back when we get a garage again. Maybe I need some sense talked into me but this makes my skull feel like it's going to implode. If we EVER have a garage again (and I'd be completely fine without one of those clutter-catchers if not for the ND winters) I want my car to fit in it. I feel like these things he wants to bring will at best be a pain to move and get lost in his parents' garage (where do you think he gets it, LOL) and at worst will be the seeds of destruction for our next garage.
What would you do if you didn't have a garage? How many tools and such would you keep? Halp.
ETA: I keep forgetting to add that we are moving cross-country. I mean if we were in the same town with the ILs this wouldn't be such an issue. I just want all our moving space to count, yk?

we currently have a 3 car garage and are looking at moving to an ecovillage where we won't have a garage and will be walking from the parking lot to the house and vice versa... hope I'll catch some good tips here
I think we'll probably at least have a shed and possibly a small (partial) basement, though...
