Need ideas for 3rd grade reading

I have *just* about finished my search for curriculum for next year for my first and third graders. I am stuck on what to use for reading for third grade since I hated what we used last year.

What have you all done for reading at this level? He is reading above his grade level and I wanted to keep it interesting and engaging. We did not do much in the way of book reports or writing at all since most of the year he hated to write more than a sentence or two.

The second half of this year I got into using the Charlotte Mason method, which I have picked and chosen from how to use for my dc. Anyway, there is a free website www.amblesideonline.com that has their version of curriculum, and a book list for each grade level, I've used their list a number of times as a jumping off point. In general, I've wanted dd to just enjoy reading books either herself or being read to, and discussing them, not writing reports at this age (CM puts off writing reports until after age 10 I believe).

Another resource is www.homeschoolshare.com which has lapbooks to make about various books- you can scan their list of third grade books for ones you think would be interesting to do. In the fall we did one, and it had activities to do at the end of each chapter to add to your lapbook.

We are planning on loosely following the lesson plan for language arts at www.lessonpathways.com. We have done some of their other stuff and my son reacts positively to it. There is lots of lesson plans there, they are very flexible and the best part to me is that they are free.

We use homeschoolshare.com, too. The Sonlight catalog is a great resource for reading lists. I wish I could afford the entire curriculum. For now, I just look for the books from their lists in second hand stores.

Is your dc really interested in reading? Some love to read so much they will follow a list. We look at the book lists at the libraries, but I pretty much let them pick what they want. You can find a lot of lesson plans on the scholastic site. You can also just type the title in the search engine and add "lesson plan" at the end of the title.

My ds didn't love to read at first..it took some time , but now he begs to go to the library. He will often see someone reading something and ask them about it. I like that he can do that.
