The 6th book in the Clan of The Cave Bear series by Auel *p3 sneak peak* (possible spoilers inside) - Page 3

After the last few, I can't imagine that this won't be another hugely repetitive, turgid doorstop.

I'm going to read it anyway, but ya, I personally just flipped past all the extended sex scenes and repetitive introductions and rehashings from previous books in the last couple ones.

Do you think that the last book could have stood alone without the repeating of some of the scenes from the other books? I am thinking she was trying to make it a stand alone book but for those of us so familiar with other books it was just irritating. What do you all think?

I am trying to keep my hopes low just in case it isnt any good but part of me is sooooo excited about this new book joy.gif

If you want a sneak peak into The Land of the Painted Caves you can go here http://www.scribd.com/doc/44999944/The-Land-of-Painted-Caves-by-Jean-M-Auel-Excerpt and read the first 3 chapters either online or download them to your computer with PDF or text.

I am going to read it because I cant wait.

If anyone wants to discuss it after they read it feel free to but please use spoiler tags for those who dont want to see it. Thanks. For those that dont know how to use spoiler tags you type in [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ] without the spaces after the ['s

I wont go into details but I am really looking forward to the new book now joy.gifjoy.gifjoy.gifjoy.gifjoy.gifjoy.gif

It's normal for authors to recover some info from previous books in the series in case someone picked up the later one without reading the others. But she just takes it way too far IMO because she does it repeatedly even in the same book. It's too the point that I'm not sure if she thinks her readers have memory problems, are morons or if she just wants to inflate the size of the book it's so repetitive.

They named the child...Jonayla? Oh Jane, oh Jane duh.gif

I started these books in High School (along with the other repetitive, vaguely perverse, never ending series - Flowers in the Attic), and the authors just keep on givin' (although I know that that FitA author is long dead...) Did I ever learn about secks...woowee banana.gif

I can't look away...like a bad car wreck...she did lose me in Book 5, but for the sake of old times, I might just dig 'em all out again and give it another go.

Like Jondalar. And Ayla.

PS We know an Ayla in real life. I wonder if mom knows the reference, cuz that's all I can think of...

Love these books joy.gif  I agree with some of you that they can be repetitive, but there's so much good information in there (not the sex, lol)!

My guess for the book is that Ayla's dream from Mammoth Hunters about Durc and a Cro-Magnon son will somewhat come true (though I think the other son will be Cro-Magnons in general).I'm guessing Durc and some other "clan" members will travel across Europe and they will end up reconnecting in a way.

My hairdresser is named Ayla--after the book.  I asked her if she had ever read the series and she said no.  I told her that her mom kind of named her after a sex fiend and she started laughing and said, "Yeah that sounds like my mom..."

This is why we did NOT use Phedre!

I'm pretty tolerant, so I'm looking forward to some closure to the series. COCB was my favorite, though. I guess I'm the odd one out.

So here are the arcs that I assume will be closed one way or another. Can anyone think of others? Most of these are pretty obvious though.

- Ayla will have to become Zelandoni, and then the First of course.

- Some wrap-up with Durc. Communication with him, or at least further visions of him.

- There was her dream about her two sons fighting. I realize it was a metaphor but wondered if the metaphor would be acted out. It seems like that would be a stretch, though.

- I assume she will have more children as well, after Jonayla

- Jonayla will have to have some arc of her own - she'll be a great horsewoman (duh) but I assume she'll tame some other animal or something, and be the Great Domesticated Animal Goddess or invent farming or something. (OK, I ventured into sarcasm here, you'll forgive me).

- Obviously there will be conflict with Brukeval and whatshername (the chick Jondular dumped). Brukeval will do something brutal. Rape Ayla, maybe (or try to, anyway). Or harm/kill one of her animals. I don't think whatshername is going to be that big of a deal, though, she doesn't have much status and there's not much she can do.

- Another Zelandoni of another cave will give Ayla problems - was it the Fourteenth? The same one that the First has problems with. She'll try to block Ayla from becoming Zelandoni.

- First Zelandoni will have to die at some point.

- Maybe Ayla will have more visions about the future, including the distant future (aka "now")

- There must be contact between the Clan and the Others. Obviously Ayla will be a major player, but I'm guessing Jondalar will be the point person there (as a male). Maybe Willomar too, as a trader.

- Joplaya will have a child. Will she die in childbirth? Will the child become a major player in the Clan/Others situation?

- Maybe Jondalar and Ayla will found their own Cave. If so, I'm guessing it will be a result of some strain.

OK, that's all I can think of for now.

Oh, thought of a few others.

- The issue of conception will be major, and probably the primary reason for any rift

- Will Ayla find out something about her original people? Yeah, that would actually be reasonable - a Traveller will come, stories will be exchanged, and the Traveller will have heard of a tribe that got totalled in the earthquake - and actually have been from the neighboring tribe or something.

- What do you guys think, one last earthquake just for fun?

- Creb will come in her dreams again and warn her of some doom.

LOL that is exactly what I thought. I was half expecting her to name the girl Iza but Jonayla, I just shook my head when I read that part.

Yeah. That was just...bad. I hadn't even thought of Iza, but that would have been great.

I understand why she named her that. The whole wanting to show that she is half Jon's and half her's but the first thought in my head was geez duh.gif the name well must be drying up.

I wonder what she will name her other kids cause I am sure she will want more kids.

What I really want to know is if Joplaya managed childbirth OK and what sex her baby is. I also want to see the whole domesticated pet thing really get going.

What I noticed most about the first 3 chapter sneak peak was the lack of emotion from Ayla regarding the cave lions and the lack of feeling expressed for Jonayla by both Ayla and Jondalar. Of course it was only the first 3 chapters and I know there will be way more than that.

The only thing I know I am going to have issues with is reading it in hard back form. I do not like hard back books I find them to hard to hold onto and really hard to read in the bath because they are so big and heavy. But I am not willing to wait another year to get the paper back version and I dont own a kindle or anything like that.

I've purposely avoided reading any of the previews. I reread the series in ebook form and there were sneak peeks in each one but I never even went to the page. I'd rather just wait and read it all at once.

thanks so much for this link! now to decide if I want to read the beginning...

I read it... fortunately it didn't end on a huge cliffhanger. That would have been painful.

Like a PP, I felt it was a little odd that in three chapters, there wasn't a lot of bonding with Jonayla, the baby. The baby pretty much served as an obstacle to the story, if anything - oh, we need to put her here, put her there, have someone else watch her. The old loaf of bread, basically. The bonding with Durc was so much more poignant. Ayla and Jondalar hunt (well, intimidate) lions (not planned), and they give the baby to someone else to take back to the nearby cave. Jondalar does some token protesting that Ayla shouldn't join (like he always does) but that's it. There's no dwelling on how Jonayla could have lost both her parents in the dangerous hunt. Ayla seems to put her down to sleep a lot rather than carrying her around. When she was sitting in the circle of Zelandonia it seemed like it would have been fine for her to have the baby on her lap, sleeping and/or nursing, but she got left in a basket near another group of women. I don't think Jondalar held her once, nor had any narration of him thinking about her (I could be mistaken though). After all those books where Ayla and Jondalar spent so much time thinking about children, they seem to have, well, stopped thinking about them.

Of course it's only three chapters, maybe chapter four will sketch in those details.

Have you all seen pictures/video of Jean Auel lately? I swear she does not look like she is 75 at all. I would guess 50's at the most.

In one of the video's she says that if she never writes about Ayla again she would miss her. So I cant help but wonder if that means she may try to write about her again in some form or other?

I love this guys site http://donsmaps.com/indexmaps.html he has made maps that go along with the Earth's Children books and it really helps bring the story to life.

Here are some pictures and drawings that I made to go with the stories http://hrdmrdajfd.tripod.com/ I had to use tripod so there are a bunch of pop ups.

Ack! I need to re-read the books now, because I'm fuzzy on a lot of the details. The first 3 books I have read a couple of times. The other books, only once. I am excited about the new book, though I agree with a lot of the PPs about the gratuitous 'pleasuring' (and I totally have no problems with sex scenes) just so repetitive. And the repeating of past details of other books. But still, have been waiting on this new book to be published, and had given up on it until I saw this thread, so joy.gif
