Winnie the Witch did it

Anything gets spilt or broken round here according to my (nearly) 4 year old it was Winnie the Witch. My favourite at the moment is he climbs up onto the sink unit to get washed then calls me to help him get down cos Winnie the Witch put him up there. I find it quite funny so I haven't really spoken to him about it and I'm not really sure how to approach it. I don't want him to think he has the perfect excuse for everything he may do nor do I want to accuse him of lying or shatter his little fantasy. How would you handle it?

Probably laugh and say something about helping Winnie the Witch fix the mess?

And talk about how it's okay to make mistakes, and how even grown-ups make mistakes and the best thing to do is to get help fixing them.

..

here we have Invisible Ink.. who did it.

so.. when my DD blames things on her "friend" Invisible Ink..
who btw.. is a girl and she laughs as she says it...

My answer is usually.. okay, so you need to talk to Invisible Ink
because she is putting you in trouble... since you invited her over

Heh. In my house, the Big Bad Wolf did it. Cracks me up each and every time he says it- 'cause he's just so serious about it! My son is 3.5. Must be the age.

My co-worker's 3.5 year old daughter blames it all on leprechauns.

I would like to imagine that all these naughty entities meet in the evenings at a pub to enjoy a few pitchers of beer together and laugh about all the trouble they caused their little human friends during the day.

Lol, they are hilarious aren't they? Ds has taken to saying 'Winnie the witch gets up to all sorts of mischief at our house', echoing me of course. I was feeling naughty today so I said 'I hope that one day Winnie the witch doesn't come here and wave her magic wand and make your jar of sweeties disappear.' He looked at me with a twinkle in his eye and said 'no mummy, I don't think she'd do that'
