Is it too weird for sibling names to rhyme?

I have a 3yo dd named Sofia. And for this new baby girl we really like Gianna but Gia for short. Is it too weird to have a Sofia and Gia?

Do you call Sofia by a nickname?

Yes, I think it's going to sound annoyingly cutesy. However, it is easily avoidable by simply not calling her Gia. Gianna is a lovely name.

You're right. I guess I just liked Gia for short. But I love Gianna. Hhhmmmmm.......

I like it. Gianna alone doesn't rhyme with Sofia, at least IMO. But Sofia and Gia are cute, and if that's what you really want go for it!

Well, I have a Sabina, Philomena, and Amelia. They all unintentionally sound too similar, but their names fit them perfectly and thats the important part.

Oh and the first two ended up with nicknames:
Mina
and
Fina

I don't like names that rhyme, personally. But, it's up to you of course I love the name Gianna. My girls sound similar (Bailey, Riley, and Rory), but I wouldn't personally chose names that rhyme.

Mine & my brother's names sound very similar. When my Mom would yell for one of us we never knew who was in trouble. Could be good or bad.

I think Sophia and Gianna are wonderful names. I have a friend with a little girl named Gianna, and they call her Gigi for short. Maybe skip Gia and just call her Gianna, or Gigi, or Anna (pronounced "ah-nah") instead.

I think those names are fine together. We have a Gianna next door...she's Gigi or Gi.

I really like Giana, and I love Gigi for a nickname. I think both would be nice with Sofia. The rhyming of Sofia and Gia would be kinda a pain, though. Just b/c I get confused with my boys, whose names all end in the N sound and are just similar enough (Nathan, Jayden, and Lincoln). Who knows - I would probably still mix them up/stutter if their names were wildly different sounding.

Nicknames often develop on their own and have nothing to do with the actual name. So, if you love Gianna then go for it! And if it does end up Gia, who cares, it's cute!

very nice names! I have an Adriana that I actually wanted to be Gianna, but DH vetoed it. I think that you probably wouldn't call her Gia anyway. Even if you do, I don't think it matter if they rhyme. If they were twins that's a whole different story.

I really like Ellery and Emery, which have been vetoed by DH has being too similar to our DD Avery. It's very much a personal decision I think, I'm OK with the similar names, DH isn't. If you and your partner are happy with it, don't worry about it!

I've got a childhood friend who has two sons and is about to have her third child - a daughter.

The oldest son's name is Aaden and the younger one's name is Braydon. Their choice of name for their unborn baby girl? Cadence.

And did I mention that their last name starts with a 'D?'

Anyway . . .

Back on topic, LOVE the name Gianna. If I weren't the whitest-white girl on the planet it would totally be on my list.

It doesn't bother me for someone else's kids, especially when it's the nicknames that rhyme, but it would bother me for my own kids for some reason. My son is Elliot, and our girl name was Charlotte. I don't feel comfortable using Charlotte if this second baby is a girl, but DH is still very much in love with it and doesnt mind the similar sounding (I have to add, I speak french and he speaks english, and the names sound way more alike in french than in english - they both end with the sound of "lot" in "parking lot")

We have a Gia! I liked Gianna, but DH didn't want to give a nickname for a name so she is Giovanna and we call her Gia for short. Being lazy, I frequently shorten it to "G" or "Gigi". Of course, when she's doing something she's not supposed to, she gets the full first and middle in classic "I'm serious" fashion! But at preschool, she goes by her full name, not the nickname. So it is just the family that uses "Gia".

That said, I think it is fine since it's the nickname (not the full name) that rhymes. If it starts to bug you or DD at some point, she can choose to go by her full name or a different nickname. Hopefully, you won't have cause to yell at both of your kids in the same breath, and therefore the fact that the names rhyme won't bother you too much.

Gianna and Sophia are very sophisticated yet cute names. Thats the only other addition I have to this conversation. Good taste.

I don't know that I'd consider it weird, but you might want to consider the "calling for..." test. This was something that concerned DH when we were naming DD2. DD1 is Lucy, and we wanted Josephine/Josie for DD2. He thought that when calling kids, Lucy and Josie sound too similar and that it'd be confusing for them. Just a thought.
