I need to have a hearing test performed for my speech-delayed DS who will be 3 at the end of August. How are these usually performed? I am 100% sure he will not keep any sort of headphones on his ears since he is very defensive of his head especially (will not wear hats, tooth brushing is extremely difficult, food texture issues, etc.) What would they do to test his hearing? He does not respond to his name consistently and it is sometimes hard to get his attention but I cannot tell if that is a social delay or a hearing issue. I honestly do not think he has hearing loss but would like to get it done before exploring the other paths on our speech therapy journey. I am trying to get him properly evaluated and set up with a speech therapist and possibly occupational therapy before he starts preschool in the fall and I'm feeling a little lost after 2 bad experiences (one with early intervention and one with a private therapist).

Our hearings tests have included:
-Sound booth tests-which can be difficult if the child doesn't want to cooperate.
-Tympanometry(think that is what's it's called) to measure the pressure in the ear--they used this to see if it was fluid causing the issue.
-ABR-My son has had 2, one when really young(like 3 mths) and he wasn't sedated, another at several months old and he was sedated. This tested his brain's reaction to sound.

We've done booth tests and pressure tests. If we don't get clearer answers soon, we well then consider sedation.
He's done really well with booth tests, but measuring the pressure is really hard as he can not STAND anything touching his ears.
If you have a child who focuses pretty well though, the booth test is pretty easy and can even be fun for them. No headphones involved.
