Would you give motrin?

My son is 7.5 months old. His second tooth just erupted and I can see two white bulges on his gums on the top.

He has an enormous drool rash and sometimes acts like his mouth hurts- frantically shoving his hand in his mouth/ chomping my shoulder etc. We have given him camilia drops and hylands tabs and they seem to work a lot of the time. He's also nursing a lot more esp at night.

The past 3 nights he has woken up an hour or so after he goes to bed and has been unable to fall asleep. He's up for two or three hours. He's not crying the whole time, he cries on and off but he's fussy and seems so tired... But he can't sleep. We nurse like crazy during this time but it does nothing but frustrate him.Hylands/camilia does not help. He eventually falls asleep after 2-3 hours.

I'm not sure if it's a developmental thing or teething or both. He just seems so uncomfortable and I want to help him if I can. He's never had motrin or Tylenol. And he doesn't have a fever... I called the ped and they suggested I give him generic motrin due to recall.

The recall scares me too.

What would you do? Just keep at it with homeopathy nursing and hugs and kisses or give the ibuprofin? He is obviously uncomfortable. Thoughts?

we also try never to give ds any medications. the few times i made exceptions were when he was teething really bad & the natural stuff never worked for us either. i just felt bad for him & figured if it helped then that made it ok. i'd give him a dose just before bedtime & then calculate how many hrs. it would be before he could have another one and usually like clockwork he would sleep better then he'd wake up around the time for the next dose and that's how i could tell it helped. IMO i'd say just give it a try and remember the really bad teething usually only lasts a few days at a time.

If you want natural remedies, you can try plantain extract (it heals gums), and one tip I got from an herbalist - couple (only 2 for very young baby, and a drop or two extra for older babies) of drops of clove oil (but it needs to be in "carrier" oil, like coconut or olive, or glycerin of course, if you are ok with giving these), it numbs gums.

My LO is teething, too. We did not use any OTC meds, and clove oil is here just in case it gets really bad.

Research it a bit more, or if you have an herbalist you can ask - it might be great.
I have Camilia here too, but I never used it, and I know it does not soothe every baby (out of 10 I know, it helped maybe 6).

Homeopathic remedies should be given based on individual baby, and if you have a homeopath nearby, your baby might get personalized help that way.

Fast healing for the little one, hang in there mama!

I did when DS was teething and having a hard time falling asleep. It helped a lot, we did generic tylonel.

if he appears to be in pain and natural things are not working I would give generic ibuprofen.

I would absolutely give generic tylenol or motrin for this. (Generic because of the recall.)

We do. If I didn't, none of us would be getting any sleep, because Hylands doesn't work for us.

At night it's Motrin because it lasts longer (I still have to redose around 4 am). During the day I give him Tylenol if he needs it (i.e. won't take a nap because of pain).

With my guy - if he starts screaming and shoving his hand in his mouth as soon as we lay him down for his bedtime diaper change, then he gets Motrin. It's not even a question at this point.

No, I don't feel comfortable giving him anything, especially now with the recall.

nope I would give anything just lots of cold frozen stuff to chew on

We've given DD Tempra twice for teething pain bad enough to put her into screaming fits.

Me too, I try chamomile, and teething tablets first, but when they are fussing and screaming, I pull out the meds. I was told once that if adults teethed we'd need morphine because it hurts so flippin bad, I don't want to be in pain and I sure don't want my kiddos in pain either.

This. When I have a toothache, I'm miserable. I just can't have my kids in pain like that if I know some motrin or tylenol will help.

I do this too. If my LO is clearly in pain and would benefit more from medication than not, I will give it. I definitely try all other avenues first, and try to avoid giving meds if possible. My DD has had a tough time with teething, and nearly every time she has cut a tooth (we're at 6) I've given generic ibuprofen once. She usually improves within 15-20 minutes and acts as if she feels some relief.

I definitely give medication if I know when DD is in pain. It helps tremendously for teething pain. The problem for me is that I've given her some medicine when she probably didn't need it due to my misread of her cues. So, yeah, that's really bad. Once you cross that line, ...

I don't give motrin to reduce fevers, but I do for pain. So he had several doses last weekend when working on more teeth and he was back to his old self.
